Summer stress doesn’t wait for visible damage to appear. Strong roots, moisture management, and proactive conditioning can make all the difference during peak heat. Read more about preparing golf course turf for summer. hubs.la/Q04jpjMl0

I often get asked what the biggest mistake clubs make when hiring a superintendent? The biggest mistake I believe is that clubs hire safe. They are risk-averse. They stick with a candidate who is currently second- or third-in-command at a well-known club. These individuals are not the decision makers. Often, an elite leader with a great skill set and character from a lesser-known club is the best candidate. The club chooses a candidate who won’t be questioned by the membership, rather than the leader, who can move the operation forward. The best hires I’ve seen weren’t the safest — they were the right fit for where the club wanted to go. Hiring is a strategic decision, not just a risk management decision.

Expectations for newly renovated greens are often very high, but it will take some time before they can perform at their peak 👇

43 years later, Ray still caddies at Cypress. If you’re lucky enough to get him on your bag, he’ll give you a tour of his old spot after you finish 15. He’ll pour you a shot of tequila from the bottle he still keeps out there near a handcarved sign marking his old spot, and tell you all about it. Then you’ll hit one of the most famous shots in golf.

When the insects finally broke through his hut and the coastal winds of winter turned frigid, Ray went home to Fircrest for the winter. When he returned the following spring, he met a woman and moved in with her. “I was domesticated,” Ray prefers to say.

“If anyone had found out,” Ray said later, “I’d have been fired on the spot.” He lived in camouflage behind one of the most iconic holes in golf for eight months. “I had the greatest commute in the world to the greatest office in the world,” Ray says. “I slept like a baby that year.”

His hut was basic: plywood walls, a mattress hauled in under the cover of night by a friend, and a small hibachi grill for omelettes and sandwiches. Ray bathed in the employee shower and showed up first every morning. No one asked where he lived, or how the guy with no phone, pager or car kept showing up on time. There were murmurs throughout the caddie yard, but Ray insists no one ever caught on. Maybe they didn’t want to know.

One night, Ray wandered off the 15th tee. The trees were thick. The wind off the Pacific was sharp. But if he ducked low enough, nobody could see him. The next day, he stole some scrap wood from the clubhouse renovation. That night, he built his new home.
