BAHADUR’S STORY STARTED WITH SOMEONE WHO REFUSED TO LOOK AWAY. ❤️ Found badly wounded and desperately hungry in Lahore, our dear supporter Navida rescued him, arranged first aid, brought him to TAWF and contributed towards his treatment. Please do the same when you see an animal suffering. REPORT them. BRING them to a shelter if you can. And if possible, contribute towards their treatment. Today, I have news I have been dreading to share. Ivory is gone. 💔 I know how many of you have been coming back every day, sometimes several times a day, asking, “How is Ivory?” We fought for her. She fought too. But her exhausted body could not fight anymore. And today, my heart is breaking for another reason too. This is Badl. And we lost him too. Badl had been discarded outside like a piece of broken furniture — still alive, but no longer wanted. He lay there for days, skeletal and helpless. Dirt filled his mouth and eyes. His body carried old and new pressure sores from lying and rubbing against the hard ground. Even the skin on his face was rubbed raw. Someone was watching him deteriorate. But the call to us came only when his life had minutes left. We wasted not a second. Our team rushed to him, lifted his dying body and raced towards the shelter. We almost made it. Just a few metres from our shelter — around the corner from safety — Badl took his last breath. That few metres is tearing my heart apart. When we contacted his owner, the response was simple: “Take him. We don’t want him back.” After a lifetime of being useful to humans, this was his ending. And this is where Ivory and Badl keep meeting in my mind tonight. We couldn't save Ivory either. But we had her for those precious final days. She had treatment. Pain relief. Food. A clean, safe place to rest. Hands that touched her gently. People beside her who cared whether she lived or died. She left this world knowing human kindness. Badl didn't even get that. If only that call had come a few days earlier. Even if we couldn't have saved him, we could have filled his stomach. Eased his pain. Cleaned the dirt from his eyes and mouth. Let him feel a gentle hand instead of the hard ground beneath his bones. We could have given him dignity before death. Please — REPORT EARLY. And if an animal has worked for you until his body can give no more, don't throw him outside to die. Call us. Give us the chance to help before his final breaths. Days like this break us. They steal our sleep. They leave us wondering how much more our hearts can carry. But then we remember: There is another Ivory somewhere. There is another Badl. And they still need us to keep going. WE CANNOT KEEP RESCUING THEM ONLY AFTER THEIR BODIES ARE BROKEN. 💔 Ivory is one painful example. A working equine can be used until her body has almost nothing left to give. Then she is discarded, we take her in and fight desperately to save what remains — while somewhere, another donkey may simply take her place. That cannot be the cycle we accept. Our purpose cannot only be to collect broken bodies at the end of horrific lives. We want to reach them before their bodies collapse, before their spirits are broken, before years of suffering become irreversible. And rescue alone is not enough. If we retire one donkey and the owner simply buys another, we have saved one life but we haven't stopped the suffering. That is why our Donkey Cart Exchange Project matters. We replace the animal-drawn cart with a motorised alternative, retire the working equine, remove the old cart, and secure a legal commitment that another donkey will not simply take their place.
