Eleven years before Michael Jordan, Nike gave NBA star Spencer Haywood 10% of the company.
While Haywood was on a road trip, his agent sold the whole 10% stake for $100,000 in cash—just to collect his $10,000 fee.
In the video below, Haywood is asked if he is still friends with the man who sold it. His answer: "Yes."
In 1973, Haywood was 24 and averaging 29 points a game in Seattle. Phil Knight came to him and asked him to wear his new shoe.
Knight didn't have the cash to match Converse. So he offered Haywood stock instead.
"First of all, I was young, too, and I'm thinking: livestock? What are you talking about? Stocks," Haywood says.
Haywood took the stock.
His agent had a problem. An agent gets 10%. Ten percent of stock in a tiny shoe company couldn't pay his bills. Ten percent of $100,000 in cash was $10,000 in his pocket right away.
So the agent kept telling Haywood the shoe would never work. At the time, Nike only made running shoes for Steve Prefontaine. When Haywood ran down the court, defenders stepped on his heel and popped the shoe right off his foot.
Before leaving for a road trip, Haywood gave in.
"I said, 'Okay, man, I give you the power of attorney. Let me just go play. I got to really focus on this game now because this is my chance.'"
When Haywood came back, the stock was gone.
"He had sold that sh*t," Haywood says. "He said, 'Man, I got the cash right here — 100,000.'"
Matt Barnes asks him what that 10% of Nike would be worth.
"It was up around 2.7 billion," Haywood says. "Years ago." At Nike's peak, 10% was worth over $8.6 billion.
The case for the agent: in 1973, Nike was a tiny Oregon running-shoe company, and the shoes literally fell off Haywood's feet during games.
Could you stay friends with a man who cost you $2.7 billion?
Melo yo ass was cookies and cream on defense lmao everybody gave you buckets

"You are disgusting. Put yourself in shape. You look like hell."
President Trump unloads on a reporter after he repeatedly questions whether the president's decision to skip a Saturday rally in Kansas has anything to do with his health or travel schedule.
"You've been following me for two weeks. I feel perfect."
The president says he simply doesn't feel the need to travel to Kansas because he feels good about upcoming elections in the state.

50 Cent files a $6 million libel lawsuit against Rick Ross' ex, Tia Kemp, for her "highly offensive" posts about 50's teenage son, Sire.
Fif's legal team filed the complaint in federal court in California on Monday (Oct. 26). The filing accuses Kemp of libel, false light invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress for sharing multiple posts online labeling 50's teenage son as having a developmental diagnosis and claiming it was caused by his mother's sexual proclivities.
"Ms. Kemp shamelessly used the label 'on the spectrum' as a pejorative slur hurled at a child to humiliate him and his family," the filing reads. "But autism is not shameful. What is shameful is fabricating a diagnosis for a private child, inventing a sexually degrading cause for it, and broadcasting both to a mass audience in order to degrade him."
The complaint goes on to say Kemp was sent a cease-and-desist letter, but she refuses to stop making "highly offensive" comments about 50's son. 50 is seeking $2 million and asking for a jury trial.
On Monday, Tia shared a post on TikTok calling out 50 Cent for getting lawyers involved. She continued to bash 50, his son and Daphne Joy.
"You can kiss your Jew lawyers in the mouth and the judge that handle the case, for all I care, b**ch," Tia vented.
On Tuesday (Oct. 27), 50 Cent reacted to news breaking about the lawsuit.
"It’s not ok to bully minors on line, kids have killed them selves over things people have said about them," he wrote on Instagram. "That gangster granny act is not gonna work no 🏳️ white flags."
Kemp started dissing 50's son after 50 commented about her son with Rick Ross allegedly being pistol-whipped in Florida recently.
