This post is going viral because it clearly calls out the wild failure of Canada’s healthcare system. There is nothing universal or free about it. We need choice and access. Canada and Sweden both spend roughly 11% of GDP on healthcare. The results? • Hip replacement: 80-day wait in Sweden vs. 125 days in Canada • Knee replacement: 111 days vs. 151 days • Unmet medical needs caused by waiting: 2% vs. 9.1% • Doctors per 1,000 people: 4.4 vs. 2.8 Nearly half of Sweden’s primary-care centres are privately operated but publicly funded. Private providers also perform more than 40% of publicly funded hip and knee replacements and over 70% of cataract procedures. Patients choose. Public funding follows. Capacity grows. Wait times fall. Sweden didn’t destroy universal healthcare by allowing private delivery, it improved access to it. Canadians need to stop vilifying other healthcare models, like the US, especially when ours leaves people to die. Competition is not privatization. And forcing sick Canadians to wait is not compassion. Canada must stop protecting the system from patients and start building a system that serves them.
