Fourteen-year-old Rose Kowalski stood seven months pregnant at her second-floor window on July 22, 1920, holding a red cloth—the danger signal she'd arranged with sixty-two-year-old ice delivery man Mr. Henrik Olsen who'd noticed her situation during his daily route and had quietly asked her two weeks ago ""Are you alright? You look very young and I see you're expecting"
And Rose had whispered ""I'm fourteen. I'm not alright. But my husband watches me constantly""—and Mr. Olsen had said ""I deliver ice to this street every day at 9am. If you need help, put a red cloth in your window. If you're safe that day, put a white cloth. I'll watch every day""—and for two weeks Rose had displayed white cloths, but today the red cloth appeared because her ""husband"" thirty-seven-year-old Stefan Kowalski had told her last night ""After the baby comes, you're going to my family in Poland with the baby. I'm staying here. You'll raise the child there under my mother's supervision"
And when Mr. Olsen had seen the red cloth at 9am, he'd immediately driven his ice wagon to the police station and reported it—and police had gone to the house and found Rose seven months pregnant, age fourteen, with packed bags because Stefan was taking her to the ship that afternoon—and Stefan was arrested for attempting to illegally transport a minor out of the country.
And investigation revealed he'd purchased Rose from her father for $900 when she was twelve—and Mr. Olsen's daily ice route welfare check system became formalized, with ice deliverymen across Boston trained to watch for signs of domestic imprisonment and given emergency contact cards to distribute—and over the next eighteen months, the ice delivery surveillance network helped rescue twenty-three women and girls, including six other child brides who'd used the colored cloth window signal system.
Rose lived until 2001, dying at age ninety-five. Before her death, she reflected: ""I was fourteen and seven months pregnant when an ice delivery man noticed something was wrong and gave me a secret signal system—white cloth in the window if I was safe, red cloth if I needed help. For two weeks I put white cloths. Then my husband said he was sending me to Poland. I put out the red cloth. The ice man saw it at 9am and had police there by 10am. My husband was arrested trying to take me to a ship. A daily ice delivery route became a daily welfare check. That ice man watched over me every morning. The day I needed him, he was there."
