Red leaves above the River Skell and Fountains Abbey framed in the distance 🍂 The beautiful land in which we live 🥰 – at Yorkshire and The Humber, England
There are places in North Yorkshire where Vikings settled, Romans walked and Monks prayed. Now we just casually walk past them on a Monday morning. We are incredible lucky to live here. What's your favourite piece of North Yorkshire history?

Every single year, autumn takes my breath away. I always write it off as the harbinger of the dark days of winter and forget just how perfect it is, with its gentle, unassuming beauty. Walking on this quiet path, all around me was the drip of mist from the leaves, a soft light that fell so slowly, and gold, gold, gold, everywhere I looked. 📍 Peak District, England

The clocks went back last night ⏰ An extra hour in bed, darker evenings creeping in and the official sign that winter's on its way. Love it or hate it, there's no denying what it means: log fires, early sunsets and cosy nights in just got a whole lot closer 🥰 – at Yorkshire and The Humber, England

So utterly depressing, hedgehogs are hurtling towards extinction on OUR watch, and only a few wildlife lovers care... paved gardens, plastic 'lawns', chopped down trees & hedges.. having a lifeless, no effort to manage, outdoor space is all that matters to the lazy & selfish..😒
Britain had about 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s; we've got under 875,000 today. The population has dropped by about 97%. Shocking.

There's a certain satisfaction that comes from a weary feeling in your legs as you wend your way along the country lanes after a long day, with the sun setting over the hills ahead and lighting up the leaves. In the air I could smell woodsmoke and autumn, the only sounds the sheep and birds and my own footsteps, heavy with a quiet tiredness, knowing I'd earned a fire, a good book and a lot of cheese. 📍 Peak District, England

Please don't leave Halloween pumpkins to rot in your garden, or dump them in the countryside. Eating pumpkins can make hedgehogs, birds and other animals poorly. Instead, dispose of pumpkins in a covered compost bin or council food waste bin. More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…

The £billions that the Labour government want to spend on carbon capture machines are a total waste of money. Nature developed this natural and beautiful carbon capture machine over millions of years. Let's plant more of them. 🌳

Visitor: "Your sheep are all stood along the wall. Every one of them, facing the same way." Farmer: "Rain's coming from the west. They've put their backs to it. Half an hour, I'd say." Visitor: "The forecast says dry till tonight." Farmer: "The forecast's in Exeter. The sheep are here." Visitor: "You trust them over the Met Office?" Farmer: "I trust them over my own knees. They came down off the top about two o'clock yesterday. The weather warning came through on my phone at five. Same storm. Three hours of notice, free, and nobody had to update the app." Visitor: "How do they know?" Farmer: "Pressure drops before the weather does. They feel it. The wind shifts a quarter and the whole flock turns like a weathervane that eats. A cow'll do the same. Backs to the weather, heads down, bunched into the hedge before you've felt a drop." Visitor: "I thought cows lying down meant rain." Farmer: "Cows lying down means cows are lying down. They do it fourteen hours a day. If that meant rain we'd have drowned. The tell's the wall, and the bunching, and the one old ewe who starts walking home when nothing's happened yet." Visitor: "Do they ever get it wrong?" Farmer: "They got the storm in October 1987 right. The Met Office famously didn't. My dad had the cattle in the low field by dinnertime. He never explained how, because he didn't need to. He'd watched them." Visitor: "Could you not just look at the sky?" Farmer: "I do. Then I look at what the sky's looking at. The sheep have been standing on this hill since before there were satellites, and every one that read the weather wrong got eaten or blown away. What's left is the ones that didn't. Natural selection's a decent forecaster." [The first drops arrived on the visitor's glasses. The sheep had not moved. They'd already finished.]

If you're feeling the worries and noise of the world at the moment, I'm sending you this beautiful walk among the chestnut trees, the pale sun flickering through the leaves and falling in pools of light on the ground. The river is sparkling at the end of the lane, and all around the birds are singing out into the morning as the mist clears. I hope it brings a little Peak District calm to your day. 📍 Peak District, England

A sublime location and great day out with a decent tea room. Walk alongside the ruins and you will feel a tingle up your spine and you can almost feel the frenzied activity of years gone by. ~ Visitor Review – at Rievaulx, England
Rievaulx Abbey once held real power. One of the wealthiest, most influential Cistercian monasteries in all of England. Then came 1538 and King Henry VIII's order to tear it all down. What survived is arguably even better, one of the most beautiful ruins in the entire country 🥰
