AFAB, they lived as a man their entire life and received a pension from the king of Spain for services rendered, and papal permission to live as a man. De Erauso worked a mule-skinner in Mexico after retiring from the army. The book about their life is called Lt. Nun.

In History the records are always there; we find what we think to look for, and military records are a wonderful resource for social and cultural knowledge. Catalina de Erauso, served as a conquistador in the Americas in the 17th century.
