Golden State or Golden Exit? Golden State or Golden Exit? I debate the California wealth tax with @gabriel_zucman on @SquawkCNBC

Stanford robotics prof. Allison Okamura explains why humanoid robots might be the most unimaginative form of robotics:
"A lot of people think that a humanoid is a generalist robot. In the ideal, theoretically a humanoid could accomplish everything a human does.
"But there are so many tasks in the world that humans canāt accomplish, and I almost feel like a humanoid robot is maybe the simplest, most unimaginative form of robot, because itās trying to replicate what we can already do."
"Itās a fantastic scientific challenge, but itās also really limiting. We have 3D printers with multiple print heads all working together to 3D print a heart. This is something a human and a humanoid could never do."
"If you could have one robot that could do many different tasks, maybe thatās more efficient than designing multiple lower cost robots. Thereās people in robotics across the spectrum."

Gabriel Zucman @gabriel_zucman has now for the third time criticized our research on Californiaās proposed billionaire tax, claiming we have provided āno answerā to his criticisms.

We have actually already responded twice on this platform, but letās address his arguments once more in detail, with the hope that third timeās the charm. 1/14
This Hoover Institution study, which has fueled the deluge of ads (more than $200 million spent by billionaires so far) to defeat the California billionaire tax, is spectacularly misleading.
Let me explain its crucial flaw. š§µ
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Zucman argues that the tax will raise his projected revenue because billionaires who leave CA after 1/1/26 will be taxed anyway.
At least $542B of net worth (Page, Brin, Thiel) departed the state by 12/31/25.
The entire thread is a misleading denial of this fact.

NEW: Only Billionaires Will Escape the Billionaire Tax
Don't be fooled when they say, "Don't worry, this tax will only apply to billionaires! They have more money than they know what to do with. Theyāre not gonna miss a few million." Here's the truthš

Medicare will require $10 trillion in taxpayer subsidies over the next decade.
What would it take to make that number smaller?
We asked a handful of Medicare experts for their $100 billion proposals. Here's what they came up with.

California's Billionaire Tax Act would collect roughly $30 billion. Accounting for lost income taxes from departures, the mean Net Present Value is negative $39 billion, from Benjamin Jaros and Joshua Rauh nber.org/papers/w35899

Congratulations to Robert E. Hall, winner of the 2026 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The professor emeritus of economics and @HooverInst senior fellow emeritus shares the prize with Michael Woodford for developing macroeconomic models built on how households and businesses actually make decisions. Those models have helped governments and central banks time their policies to soften economic shocks.

Congratulations to our Hoover colleague Bob Hall on winning theĀ 2026 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Bob is one of the most distinguished economists of his generation, whose work has profoundly shaped our understanding of economic growth, employment, and the forces that drive the American economy. He has been instrumental in the way policy leaders think about the free market economy. This great honor is a well-deserved recognition of a remarkable career.

Hoover Institution economist @JoshRauh joins Uncommon Knowledge with @P_M_Robinson to examine America's mounting federal debt and the political obstacles to controlling government spending.
Rauh discusses why higher taxes and faster economic growth alone cannot close the budget gap, warns that rising interest costs could lead to an inflationary crisis, and argues for slowing the growth of entitlement spending.
The conversation also covers President Trump's tariff policies; California's proposed billionaire tax and why it has the potential to drive taxpayers out of the state; and the lessons offered by states such as Texas and Florida.

New podcast with @RepSmucker and Brian Miller on the need for a fiscal commission to tackle the federal debt.
It's not going to happen with just economic growth. Or higher taxes. Or less spending.
It's going to take a combination of all three, supported ultimately by voters.
