Mimi's Perspective: Binance Where Did the Money Go? This morning, @JoeShmoe_x raised a question that got my attention. Where did the money go? Well, Joe, I decided to do a little digging, and apparently, some of that money has been taking quite the trip. According to investigators, roughly $3.3 billion is still sitting in wallets controlled by whoever pulled this off. And we're not talking about one wallet, either. The money has been spread across dozens of them. Some of the stolen Bitcoin was divided among 19 different addresses. Other funds were exchanged for different cryptocurrencies, making the money harder to recover. And get this. Investigators found that nearly $60 million in stolen crypto was put into a lending platform and used to borrow even more crypto. Yes, you read that correctly. Someone allegedly stole billions and then used part of the stolen money to take out a crypto loan. I can't make this stuff up. Now, some of the money has been frozen, which is good news. But here's the part people need to understand. Just because investigators can see where the money is doesn't mean they can get their hands on it. It's almost like watching somebody walk around with your stolen wallet while being unable to take it back. And that's where things get complicated. Some cryptocurrencies can be frozen by the companies that issue them. Others, like Bitcoin, don't work that way. So even if investigators know exactly where those funds are sitting, getting them back could be another story. There's also a possible connection to another crypto theft from September. Investigators found that some of the money reached a wallet previously linked to that incident. Coincidence? Possibly. A connection worth investigating? Absolutely. But here's what I'm really interested in. How did someone get enough access to move billions of dollars in the first place? We're hearing reports that the problem may have involved the very systems Binance uses to approve transactions. If that's confirmed, we're talking about something much bigger than somebody guessing a password. And while Binance says it will cover the losses, I still have questions. Are customers already being reimbursed, or are they waiting? How much of the stolen money will actually be recovered? And if the original money is eventually recovered after Binance replaces it, who gets those recovered funds? Because that's another part of this conversation nobody seems to be discussing enough. Joe asked where the money went. We're starting to get answers about where it traveled, but not necessarily where this whole mess ends. And as we head into the weekend, I'll be watching what happens next. Because finding the money is one thing. Getting it back is another. And somebody still needs to explain how it walked out the door in the first place.

Sometimes "Not Found" Is Exactly What You Want to See After the week we've had talking about cybersecurity, PHP2Shell and everything else trying to make us question whether anything connected to the internet is safe anymore, I figured it was probably a good time to check on something of my own. My validator node. I use Contabo to host my server, and I'm interested in keeping my node healthy. Now I'm going to admit something. I'm still very much a newbie when it comes to the technical side of running my own node. I understand why I have it. I'm learning more about how it works. But I'm not sitting in front of a computer staring at my node every day. Or every week. Honestly, not even every month. It's just not my thing. My node doesn't open until the end of December, so constantly watching something I can't really do anything with yet isn't exactly my idea of a good time. What I do instead is periodically check in. I reached out to Tee from House of Validators, which is something I do from time to time. I ask questions, find out if there's anything I should be paying attention to and generally make sure everything is where it should be. I also check Contabo for the health of my server. And my highly technical method for checking that? Green or red. That's it. Green, Mimi is happy. Red, Mimi starts asking questions. I told you I'm still learning. But after all the PHP2Shell news this week, I wanted to know a little more than green or red. So I took a closer look at what was actually running on my server. Here's what came back: Operating system: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS PHP command: Not found PHP packages: None detected PHP web services: None detected PHP processes: None detected Docker: Not installed PHP exposure: No evidence detected Now if you're anything like me, you might look at that list and say... Okay. Is that good? In this particular situation, yes. And here's the everyday-person explanation. Think of my server like a small apartment I've rented inside a much larger building. Contabo provides the building and the infrastructure. My VPS is my apartment. Ubuntu is basically the operating system running inside my apartment. In this case, Ubuntu 24.04 is an LTS, or Long-Term Support, release. That means it receives security maintenance for years instead of quickly becoming outdated and unsupported. Then we get to PHP. PHP is software commonly used to run websites and web applications, and it happens to be at the center of the PHP2Shell security alert we've been talking about this week. My server check couldn't find PHP. No PHP command. No PHP packages. No PHP web services. No PHP processes. And no evidence of PHP exposure. In everyday language, the particular software affected by PHP2Shell doesn't appear to be installed or running on my server. So based on that check, my node doesn't appear to have the PHP attack surface involved in PHP2Shell. That's reassuring. But I want to be very clear about something. That does NOT mean my server is magically protected from every cybersecurity threat out there. It means this particular door everyone has been talking about this week doesn't appear to exist on my server. There are still other doors. And those still need to be secured. That's actually where understanding what Contabo does, and what I'm responsible for, becomes important. Contabo isn't the blockchain and it isn't my validator. It's the infrastructure provider hosting the virtual server my node runs on. Going back to my apartment example, Contabo provides the building and some of the security around the property. But I'm still responsible for what happens inside my apartment. Contabo provides protections and tools such as DDoS protection and network-level firewall options for its cloud servers. Its Customer Panel also supports multi-factor authentication, and additional tools such as snapshots, backups and monitoring are available depending on the server and services being used. Those things matter to me because my node needs reliable infrastructure. But using a hosting company doesn't mean I can hand over all responsibility and never think about my server again. It isn't "set it and forget it" security. Software still needs to be kept current. Accounts need to be protected. Firewalls need to be configured properly. Backups matter. And occasionally someone needs to look under the hood. That's probably one of the biggest things I'm learning from running my own node. I don't have to know everything. But I do need to know enough to ask the right questions. What operating system am I running? Is it receiving security updates? What software is installed? What is actually exposed to the internet? Is my account protected with MFA? Do I have a backup if something goes wrong? And who do I ask when I see something I don't understand? For me, that last one matters. That's why I periodically check in with House of Validators instead of pretending I suddenly became a systems administrator because I own a node. There's nothing wrong with saying, "I don't know what this means." I'd much rather ask the question than assume everything is fine because I saw a green status light. And after this week's security alerts, that's probably my biggest takeaway. Security isn't about panicking every time a new vulnerability hits the news. It's about figuring out whether it actually applies to what you're running, understanding the protections you already have and knowing where your responsibility begins. This week PHP2Shell gave me a reason to look a little deeper than green or red. What I found was reassuring. PHP wasn't found. PHP packages weren't found. PHP services weren't found. PHP processes weren't found. And for once... "Not found" was exactly what I wanted to find. Just my perspective.
