Hippo Hop is now live on PS and Steam, and we have a first Spanish guide from @JuanmiConsolas !

In intense arcade games, high movement speed and / or lethal hazards keep player focus at 100%. But when you intentionally dial back the intensity to create a more atmospheric experience, a new challenge emerges: How do you keep the player in "flow state" without overwhelming them or letting them get bored?
One approach is keeping interactive element spacing tight (so the player always has a micro-goal on screen), paired with strong atmospheric visuals and a memorable soundtrack.
For devs & designers: How have you balanced downtime vs. micro-engagement in lower-tempo games?

Hippo Hop launches on PlayStation and Steam on October 14th.
Cozy 1950s jazz lounge vibes, with the challenge level slowly growing over time, for a precision-flying finish. Add it to your wishlist now to get notified the second it drops!

2D Flight Physics: Force Acceleration vs. Velocity Impulse 🦛✈️
When designing 2D flying mechanics, the instinct is often to apply an upward force when flapping. But in precision levels, pure force physics can make the character feel "floaty" because downward momentum takes time to counteract.
For Hippo Hop, I went with a velocity-reset impulse:
1️⃣ Pressing flap immediately sets vy to a fixed negative value (upward), ignoring previous downward momentum.
2️⃣ Standard gravity takes over immediately, decelerating the arc into a natural fall.
3️⃣ Terminal velocity caps maximum fall speed so the drop never becomes unpredictable. The result? Snappy, 100% deterministic movement where every death is on the player's timing—not momentum lag.
Do you prefer floaty, momentum-heavy flight physics or snappy impulse controls in precision platformers?

Unpopular gamedev opinion: A game being 'hard' isn't impressive if the difficulty just comes from clunky controls or bad readability.
True difficulty should come from mastering fair systems, not fighting the game.
What’s a design trend you wish more modern games would abandon?
What makes a game environment feel truly alive to you without adding hostile enemies or heavy combat?
Weather transitions that change ambient audio (rain on leaves vs. stone)
NPCs having actual daily routines instead of standing in place
Flora/fauna reacting dynamically when you walk past
For me, it's wind and vegetation physics combined with multi-layered ambient sound design. You can sit on a hill for 10 minutes and never get bored.

What’s the "game logic" thing you catch yourself wishing worked in real life?
-Double jumping over obstacles?
-Fast-traveling back home?
--Having a quick-save button before awkward social interactions?
My take: Opening random containers to find free money and items

Finishing the game is only half the battle, and many new devs don't realize all of the work that comes after you push the final build.
As developers, most of us aren't natural salespeople. We’d rather spend hours tweaking physics than pitching on social media.
Posting consistently when engagement is low can feel exhausting, but marketing is a numbers game. Consistency builds momentum, even when you can't see it yet.
To every creator out there grinding in silence: keep posting, keep reaching out, and keep pushing. 🎷✨

Some players fly through Hippo Hop like smooth soloists... and others fly like a toddler throwing a drum kit down the stairs. 🦛🥁💥
I just watched @CrossoverDani finish the game by doing his best to ignore every single mechanic. I'm proud of the accessibility, but visually? Total chaos!
Test your flow state in the demo!
