Most Halloween frights are gone by morning, but the mental health care fears our interns named stick around all year, from too little support in schools to insurance that never leads to a provider because directories are full of ghosts. In secret-shopper studies we commissioned, published in JAMA Health Forum, only about one in eight calls to in-network mental health providers led to an appointment.
These gaps were built by policy, and better policy can close them.
We’re proud to have partnered with @NatlGovsAssoc on the Youth Mental Health Action Lab and help states bring more mental health support into schools. Youth mental health is a top priority.
What do state teams take home from a NGA Youth Mental Health Action Lab? Sustainable funding, universal screening, statewide standards and stronger coordination across agencies. Recap: nga.org/meetings/youth-menta…
From bill signings in New Jersey and Delaware to hearing rooms in Richmond and the National Governors Association’s Youth Mental Health Action Lab, the past two months kept us on the move.
We sat down with moms from six states with @countonmothers to talk about Pulse Check 2026. They didn’t know each other, but they described the same thing: the need for mental healthcare that’s easy to get and easy to afford.
Mental health is health. Moms deserve to be heard.

Having insurance should mean you can get care. Too often, it doesn’t.
Our Chief Advocacy Officer Angela Kimball told @DAMEmagazine how insurers list providers who aren’t taking patients.
Our SVP of Policymaker Relations Caitlin Hochul told @HealthyWomen why insurance practices are driving providers out of the network.
When you reach out for help, a provider should be there to answer.

Ever called a list of in-network therapists and gotten nowhere? You’re not imagining it. New research commissioned by us and published in JAMA Health Forum, shows that in 5,822 calls to in-network mental health providers across five states, only about 1 in 8 calls led to an appointment. Having insurance should mean you can get care.

Mental health education is an essential building block for healthy kids. It teaches them about maintaining good mental health, recognizing common disorders and asking for help, and reduces stigma.
Our new roadmap with @NAMICommunicate and The Mental Health Literacy Collaborative (MHLC) helps state leaders bring mental health education into every classroom.

We’ve spent years telling people it’s okay to ask for help, and more of them are listening, taking the important first step of looking after their mental health. What they find is a system still catching up, with nearly half of adults living with a diagnosable mental health condition going without treatment last year.
Good mental health care should be easy to get and easy to afford, and we’re working with lawmakers in Washington and in statehouses across the country to make that real.
🎤 We’re asking you: What should the next president do to improve mental health in America?
Inseparable just launched a national listening survey. It takes a few minutes to complete, and your answers will help keep mental health front and center throughout the next presidential election.
