Sumner-Fredericksburg AD Mike Quigley has confirmed to me that the Cougars will not have a varsity girlsβ season this year. He cited low numbers and injuries led to the decision. He says they decided on a JV schedule and will not co-op with another school.
Sad development, imo.
And hereβs the less talked about part:
Camanche are now forced into 3A instead of 2A.
Lake Mills, Clayton Ridge, and WACO are now forced into 2A.
The sport is bleeding. Seasons are being canceled. Teams are losing games from their schedules. Teams are being forced up.
In other news, IGHSAU has confirmed these area schools will not field varsity girls basketball teams this winter:
Central City
Postville
Starmont
Vinton-Shellsburg
West Central
Also, Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The state government stepped in and tried to course correct issues like this with the 8th grade ruling. Clearly it wasnβt enough, but at least they tried.

An interesting but unlikely development to keep an eye on: if 2 more schools that are 2A are larger decide to cancel their season. . . Newell-Fonda will become the smallest 2A.
The Association does a great job with football playoffs:
β’ Not everyone automatically qualifies
β’ Fairness is prioritized over geography
They donβt get it perfect (no one could!) but they clearly do their best to make it fair. This lesson should be copied by the Union!
West Delaware may be fielding a varsity, but the WAMAC will remain the same size. Vinton-Shellsburg is missing from the latest tentative classification.
Despite 8th graders being allowed to play, there are now several schools that wonβt have varsities.
No Postville or Sumner-Fredericksburg in yesterdayβs updated classifications released by the the union. Will these teams still be fielding JVs?
Postville is missing from the tentative classifications. Are they not having a varsity again for the second straight season, despite having a JV team last year and 8th graders now being eligible?
When a post criticizing the Ranking/Regional process has nearly 30k views, itβs time for something to change.
Could they look these athletes drawing the short end of the stick in the eye and say, βSorry, we just couldnβt get the rubber bands to stretch far enough this year.β
Ran an Instagram poll where 75% of participants voted that they do NOT like the rubber band method for determining regionals.
Bringing back a quote from the Regional Opinion piece which had >29k views: βWhatβs easy for the Union is NOT best for the players and coaches.β
Eyes open, eyes closed⦠the tacks and rubber bands are just as unprofessional and inaccurate either way
