Michael Jordan was dancing on the team bus to an album that wouldn't come out for another four months, and the guy who sang it had no idea that footage existed until 22 years later.
It's June 3, 1998, six hours before Game 1 of the Finals in Salt Lake City. Somebody on the bus asks MJ what he's listening to, and he says Kenny Lattimore, brand new, not even out yet, he's a friend of mine.
He wasn't making that up. The album was From the Soul of Man and it didn't drop until that October. Columbia was only sending early copies to a handful of music people who were helping pick the singles, and Lattimore went to his label and told them Michael Jordan had to be on that list too.
The two of them go back to 1996. MJ was launching a cologne and wanted Lattimore's song "Never Too Busy" in the commercial. The publishers got into a fight over money, the deal fell through, and Kenny said he was devastated.
MJ basically just kept promoting him anyway. Charles Barkley told Lattimore years later that Mike was going around the league telling guys they needed his CD. When Nike launched the Jordan Brand in New York in September '97, MJ had Lattimore perform, and before the guests came in he had security hold the door so Kenny could sing him and Ahmad Rashad an album cut, track 5 off his first record.
And funny enough, the Bulls lost that night. 88-85 in overtime, MJ had 33. They won four of the next five and he closed the whole thing out in that same arena with the last shot of his Bulls career.
Kenny didn't see any of this until 2020, when ESPN called asking to clear his song "Days Like This" for The Last Dance. He sat at home and watched the episode live like the rest of us, and he says his phone started blowing up within seconds of MJ saying his name. His sales took off from a clip that was older than some of the people sharing it.
His guess on why MJ was warming up to R&B before a Finals game is that Mike was already so wired going into games that he needed something smooth to settle him down.
One CD he mailed in 1998 ended up being the best marketing of his career.

Wife: “Omg babe why are you crying?”
Me: “Ernie Johnson is retiring.”
Wife: “Who?”
Me: “Get out! YOU GET THE HELL OUT!”

I shed a single tear like Denzel in Glory. This crew has been part of my entire life
I'm old enough to remember when they were on TV Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and that's probably when I became a night owl. No going to sleep till they went off the air

I do miss Steve Jobs.
He was just on another level in many ways;

This got me tearing up at my desk. @TurnerSportsEJ sincerely thank you for the years, memories, and the joy you bring. You’re an icon and the community at large thanks you and loves you 😭🤟🏾
007 First Light and SAROS are my picks for Game of the Year and it’s not even close for another pick. @Housemarque and @IOInteractive you and your teams have moved me and set the bar so high. Thank you 🙏🏽

So proud of Meleek Thomas. He did not play for two games but was prepared for when his number was called!! Cleveland won in overtime and Meleek scored 16 points in an overtime win and went 4 of 5 from the three point line!
Two days ago my comment to him was to continue to prepare for games like you are going to play 30 minutes. Obviously he did that tonight, proud of you Meleek!

The Mario Hezonja signing is going to prove to be what gets the @cavs over the hump.
He's already noticed how the offense should run through the bigs, how terrible the Cavs have been at exploiting mismatches, AND he's already called both out in the media?
Yeah. I'm all in.

Mario Hezonja Postgame After Win vs Nets:
“[0:14] It was similar to Philly because we were executing really good to start the game. The third quarter was much better from our starters now in this game…it takes time for things to click. There are no excuses on that but we’re working on it. There are some new pieces we added to the team so this unfortunately takes some time—[0:56, Balancing Things You Learned] Next game, next possession. It’s frustrating to have that mentality for us sometimes but it really comes down to that. Refresh your mind and get ready for what’s coming towards you—[1:35, How Long It Takes To Get Comfortable As A Team] As a group, it takes time everywhere. The more pieces you add, the more time you will need. This is just worldwide sports….like the first game, I really felt nothing. Just contribute to winning basketball as an organization such as us—[2:26, Main Aspect of Maintaining A Big Lead] Good offense because then it helps you guard the ball easier. The pressure is on them and our rhythm is imposed onto the opponent so it’s much easier to go both ways…I think that impacts a lot of the mental aspect of a player and the team on the defensive side…the more we can take care of the ball, get some good possessions, it’s gonna help us tremendously because on the back side we have two of the best defenders in the whole world. They help us a lot but we have to help them offensively getting everyone on the same page—[3:37, Jaylon Tyson] Yeah, yeah that’s my brother. He was great. He made an impact on the game…he even got hit and I told him to get back up, keep doing what he’s doing on the floor, and that he’s okay. He impacted winning…really happy to share the court with him.”
