Protocols organise coordination from formal standards to informal norms. The Protocol Field maps them against the gravity of protocol debt. Applying this diagnostic framework to human-AI coordination makes these emergent patterns legible. itjobswatch.co.uk/research-n… #protocoldebt

AlphaZero, AlphaFold, AlphaProof. A decade of AI whose reasoning is not human and whose outputs arrive at scales no community can read. Silver and Sutton describe the next stage as the era of experience, where models learn to reason in nonhuman terms rather than on finite human data. The history of software engineering is a ladder of abstraction. Each rung lifts the work to a wider audience. Machine code -> assembly -> C -> Python -> natural language. The ladder exists so humans can climb it. But the rungs are not features of computation. Patterns, idioms, textbooks, even the category "software engineer". These are not just tools. They are constitutive constraints built around a human reader. The ladder still stands but the territory it leads to is not where the work happens anymore. The same logic applies to accountants, lawyers, statisticians, actuaries, translators, editors. Wherever a profession was built around a reader. What are the rungs for, when nobody is climbing?

If you are wondering what 'working with AI' means for your career, this essay reframes the question. The language used to describe human-AI interaction may itself be the problem. The human capacities that matter most are the ones that resist automation. nitter.cf/jhngrant/status/203785…

The State of React 2025 survey reports a mix of Single Page Applications (SPA), Server-Side Rendering (SSR) and Static Site Generation (SSG). Awareness of these rendering patterns and associated skills helps assess the range of employment opportunities within the React ecosystem.

Study finds developers using AI finished initial work faster, and subsequent maintenance by a separate developer was not measurably worse. Open question is whether this scales without building "cognitive debt" across larger codebases and longer timeframes arxiv.org/abs/2507.00788

In the domain of coding, the likes of Gemini, Claude, and Codex are steadily improving. What is lagging is the co-evolution of practice. Recent research shows that despite anticipated productivity gains the opposite is often experienced. ... 1/n

But if you consider coding agents as a form of synthetic labour rather than just productivity tools, a variant of Brooks' Law applies: >Adding synthetic manpower to a late software project makes it later. ... 2/n

In these early stages of co-evolution, human workflows and AI agents have not yet adapted to one another. The implication is that having more capable models won't be enough. But in time, this supervisory craft will define new protocols that reduce the collaboration overhead. 3/3

Quitting programming as a career right now because of LLMs would be like quitting carpentry as a career thanks to the invention of the table saw.
