Advancing Black women’s leadership is essential to building a more equitable future.
Yet barriers to leadership persist—even for highly educated Black women—and student debt and unequal access to higher education can further limit opportunities for advancement.
Through our Advancing Black Women in Leadership initiative, we promote research and solutions to expand opportunities for Black women’s leadership.
Swipe to explore our latest article series to learn more about why Black women’s leadership matters, the gaps that remain, and the policies and opportunities that can help close them.

The IWPR community, along with all who knew, loved, and were impacted by the life and work of Dolores Huerta, mourns her passing. While we are saddened by this tremendous loss, we are deeply grateful for her extraordinary life and enduring legacy.
Through our work to eliminate structural barriers and advance women’s full participation in society, we will continue the path that Dolores forged. We owe her a tremendous debt for the sacrifices she made in the pursuit of dignity and freedom. Because of her tireless fight for equality, in many ways, we have inherited a better place to live.

IWPR Statement on Cornell University, LSU, and Title IX
Recent coverage of sexual assault cases at Cornell University and at Louisiana State University is a stark reminder of the ways our current systems continue to fail survivors. Repeated attacks on Title IX by the Trump administration have weakened protections for those who experience sexual violence, making it more difficult for survivors to come forward and feel supported and safe throughout the process.
IWPR stands in solidarity with all survivors who courageously speak out, the organizations providing essential support on the front lines, and the researchers and advocates working to bring the reality of these traumatic experiences to the forefront of public discourse. Together, they are advancing the evidence and solutions needed to create safer, more equitable environments for all.

New data: the gender wage gap narrowed in 2025 — but here's the full picture.
Women working full-time, year-round earned 83.9 cents for every dollar men earned in 2025, up from 80.6 cents in 2024. But this isn't the win it looks like on the surface. This happened because women's earnings grew faster than men's during a high-cost economy where every household member has to work as much as possible just to keep up.
Women still earn less than men, but their lower earnings grew at a higher rate.
The wage gap is still real. The affordability crisis is still real. Read our full statement: bit.ly/4re82ql

The federal government just made a choice about whose health matters.
HHS has terminated 16 grants worth $38 million—programs supporting maternal and infant health, postpartum care, and infant mortality prevention. Many of these programs served the communities carrying the heaviest burden of this crisis: Black mothers and infants, who die from pregnancy-related causes at rates far above the national average.
Their new priority? Low sperm count and erectile dysfunction. Mothers and infants deserve better than being an afterthought.
Labor Day is a reminder: Unions are essential for gender equity.
Unions give workers a voice on the job and can help advance better wages, benefits, workplace protections, and economic security for women.
Our Better Workplaces policy brief outlines federal solutions to strengthen worker power and build workplaces where everyone can thrive.

Gloria Steinem was a fierce fighter, a witty writer, and a tireless champion of equity and justice. As a journalist, activist, and feminist icon, she challenged the status quo and will be remembered for the trails she blazed in the name of progress. A steadfast defender of reproductive autonomy, she helped women gain and build economic security while growing political power. Gloria believed deeply in the importance of women owning and telling their own stories, ensuring that their experiences would never be diminished, overlooked, or swept under the rug.
In her lifetime, Gloria saw both immense progress and devastating backsliding, and through it all she never stopped fighting. In her 2022 Wesleyan University commencement address, she said, “I am a hope-a-holic. I believe that hope is a form of planning.”
That is the essence of what we must all continue to do to ensure that the gender equity Gloria spent her life championing becomes a full and lasting reality.

This year, both #BlackWomensEqualPayDay and #MomsEqualPayDay were reminders of how systemic barriers can widen wage gaps and compound inequities.
This is especially true when looking at the experience of care workers, disproportionately women of color who contend with persistent undervaluing of their work. Read more:
