I wanted to get to the bottom of Turnitin's purpose for AI detection in its platform.
Their Chief Product Officer told me that it's for transparency, so that educators can see how it's being used. Not to penalise students, but to learn from how they are using it.
So it you are penalising students based on Turnitin's AI then this is not the purpose of the product. In the longer interview, you'll learn that it cannot be the purpose as it lacks accuracy!
So please stop using detectors to make judgments about students.
