Hot off the press in @SciImmunology: why COVID-19 hits older hosts harder.
shorturl.at/kedsb
Aged platelets release more serotonin → procoagulant platelets → fibrin in the lung → respiratory failure. 1/2
Out now in @EurJImmunol: “Beyond Exhaustion: The RNA Regulatory Layer of Tissue-Instructed T Cell Dysfunction.”
Beyond TF networks and chromatin, an RNA layer is emerging as a determinant of exhausted T cell identity. ↓ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Is that layer generic, or written by the tissue where priming happens? Together with the Bodega lab, we propose the liver as the model to find out, and work from our two labs addressing exactly this is on the way.
Kudos to @frarro1 and Federica Marasca for spearheading this!

Scientists with @DavideMarotta18 at @MyUniSR found that platelet-derived serotonin promotes blood clotting and lung dysfunction during #SARSCoV2 infection, helping explain greater disease severity with age. 🩸

Delighted to share new work published in @ScienceMagazine entitled 'Tumor-derived antioxidants suppress immunity by depriving T cells of reactive oxygen species,' led by @XanWesolowski in the lab science.org/eprint/YQNFAHKNF…
Blocking serotonin uptake or 5-HT2A protects, with no cost to viral control.
Kudos to postdoc @DavideMarotta18, who spearheaded this, and to @MarcoDegiov89 for co-supervising - a genuinely fun collaboration between our two labs at @SanRaffaeleMI @MyUniSR 2/2

Online now! @EnriqueGab, @gsotoheredero et al identify an accumulation of cytotoxic CD4+ T cells producing CCL5 in the bone marrow during aging, linked to age-associated myelopoiesis. Blocking this axis improves healthspan in aged mice @MMittelbrunn nature.com/articles/s43587-0…

The immune system does not behave in the same way in every tissue.
The first UniSR – @Tsinghua_Uni symposium explored new perspectives on cancer immunotherapy, neuroimmune interactions and immune memory.

Fascinating work from the @IdoAmitLab! A must read
1/15 Can we engineer safer, more effective CAR T cells for MS? New in @CellCellPress: we identify pathogenic PD-1⁺ T cells and target them with inflammation-gated CAR T cells that reprogram neuroinflammation. @Rotem_Shalita @mayaby15 Chamutal Gur

Great science and fun at our lab's annual retreat, bringing together my team with Mirela Kuka, @MarcoDegiov89, and Donato Inverso's teams. Thanks to invited speakers @Lo_Zanzi and Stefano Sammicheli for inspiring lectures and great questions. Proud of what we've built together.
In vista della Giornata Mondiale dell'Epatite (28 luglio), abbiamo raccontato a UniSR le due strategie complementari su cui lavoriamo per la cura funzionale dell'epatite B cronica 🔗 blog.unisr.it/cura-funzional…
Proud of Dr. @ValentinaVenzin, a former PhD student in my lab, for winning the EFIS ACTERIA Doctoral Thesis Prize! Her work revealed how CD4+ T cells rescue dysfunctional CD8+ T cells in the liver during chronic HBV via IL-27. Congrats, Valentina! 🎉

Exciting news!👉LiveRNA, co-founded by @iannaconelab, has received the Paris-Saclay Cancer Cluster BOOST Grant to advance its next-generation #mRNA #immunotherapy platform and bring innovative cancer treatments closer to patients.
Pleased to have contributed to this new @ScienceMagazine paper on how lymphoid tissue chemokines limit CD8⁺ T cell priming duration to preserve T cell functionality. Congrats to @LukasAltenburg2 and Jens Stein! science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Abortive infection: T cells as early, antibody-independent defenders dlvr.it/TRrTjj
Neutralizing antibodies are not the whole story. In @NatRevImmunol, we highlight an alternative mode of protection: T cells can eliminate infection at its earliest stage, before it becomes detectable. We term this “abortive infection”
rdcu.be/fbq8p
Thread 1/4
Implications:
• T cells can act at inception, not just during clearance
• Standard readouts (serology/PCR) miss these events
• True exposure and immunity are likely underestimated
→ We need to measure what T cells actually do
This calls for a shift in vaccine design:
• target early, conserved viral proteins
• build tissue-resident immunity
• combine antibodies and T cells
Great collaboration with Leo Swadling, @ValeFuma91 and @maini_lab
