We've enjoyed a week of advanced bacterial phylogenetics training @Uniibadan as part of our #DEGAiN - Deep Enteric Genome Analysis in Nigeria initiative, during which bioinformaticians in our team learned alongside peers from all over the continent…/2
“incomplete plasmid reconstruction from short-read hinders full knowledge about plasmid.” Excited to share with you our paper doi.org/10.1128/msystems.011…. With short and long reads we infer clonal and plasmid transmission. All thanks to my supervisor @SandraReuter9 for her mentorship

Very happy to see this work in print @NatureComms. We used a combination of classical microbiology, whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics tools to describe epidemiology of invasive Klebsiella pneumoniae archived as part of routine surveillance form a medical centre. 1/2.

Great talk of @SandraReuter9 about sharing plasmids in #klebsiella. Take home message: "plasmids are complicated" (but fascinating). #dghm2024

We visited the International School Ibadan today to educate the secondary school students on Antimicrobial Resistance.
As expected, they had very intriguing questions which we answered.

Exciting opportunity to do a PhD on AMR dynamics of chronic P. aeruginosa infections with me at @sangerinstitute and Prof Craig Maclean @UniofOxford. Mainly bioinformatics but opportunities to combine with wet-lab

Congratulations once again @bioinfo_erkison and yes! Dr Erkison was one of my tutors in bioinformatics, etc. while I was in @iruka_okeke lab. This I could say was one of the reasons I am able to fit in where I am today. Thank you! I wish you all the best in the next phase 🤗 – at Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
Today @bioinfo_erkison defended his PhD @uni_copenhagen after working there & with us on resistant #Acinetobacter in Nigeria. Project wascosupervised by Anders Dalsgaard & I, with a lot of input from some fab collaborators.../2

The possibilities of genomic sequencing are huge.
The technology can unlock the secrets of disease prevention, dispel myths around disease outbreaks, and allow governments to act in real-time.

🕺🏻FRIDAY! in Reuter’s lab. I am glad the *GridION* spots are fully occupied. The good thing is that analysis is set to start automatically and we have major results before the next working day 😉 😁@Ayorinde_Afo @HirenGhosh @Stef_A_M @SandraReuter9 @nanopore #WGS #multiplexing – at Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

What have you heard about Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus spp. (CoNS)?
Our recent paper nature.com/articles/s42003-0… in Nature's @CommsBio investigated the propensity of these opportunistic pathogens to frequently exchange genetic materials in geographically linked diseased animals

It is an honor & a privilege to be appointed to the @ResolveTSL 🇳🇬 board this year. I look forward to working with the organization to improve public health in Nigeria.
RTSL Nigeria Board of Directors welcomes Dr. Iruka Okeke! Her experience in infectious diseases and laboratory medicine will be important to the continued growth of RTSL Nigeria as we work to further support Nigeria’s progress in public health. bit.ly/41051MI
Proud day for us as newly-minted Dr @OlabisiAkinlabi defended her PhD thesis, becoming my 1st PhD from @UniIbadan - earlier ones enrolled elsewhere. She joined our group right after we arrived as one or my first set of MSc students & coordinates our diarrheal pathogen research/2

But it’s the perfect example of how a motivated and talented post doc can really lead an important initiative/ resource for the field. Was a pleasure - thanks @odionikh for the opp to collaborate on this & the #onehealth expertise you brought to our group.

@odionikh conceived this idea when he noticed the gap in the literature as we researched our @NatureMicrobiol review
doi.org/10.1038/s41564, which we coauthored with @pilarxavier & @bioinfo_erkison The idea was a little big for that paper & a LOT of work../2
The absence, or nascence, of #AMR surveillance in LMICs is well-known. Where present, food-animals are less surveilled. Understanding that food-animals are critical in the #OneHealth, Prof @iruka_okeke and I used point-surveillance to aggregate a snapshot of #AMR in >28,000...1/2
