Cranz is a 23 year old righty. 7th round pick in the 2024 draft, has made his way up to AAA. Velo jumped up to 95 this year with swing-and-miss shape and a couple of breakers. Reliever only in the minors
The #SFGiants and Nationals completed a trade today with RHP Robert Cranz joining the Giants organization in exchange for LHP Reiver Sanmartín.

Giants are looking for a new hitting coach, and sounds like it won’t be the only change to their staff:
The Royals have hired Hunter Mense as their new hitting coach, sources tell me and @mi_guardado. Mense had been the hitting coach with the Giants.
So the Giants will need to make a coaching staff change after all. This leaves Oscar Bernard as the lone hitting coach, and he has the assistant title at the present moment. There are a couple of big names on the coaching free agent market: Kevin Long, Jeff Albert

The other world is that the Giants decide to make a huge splash for Gunnar Henderson, but that kind of trade would nuke their farm and I don't think they'd want to do that
Not seeing much of a fit for the Giants. Bradish (while I do like him) has an extremely bloated 5/$90MM that's only just starting in 2027. Baz has 4/$66.2MM left. Helsley is a 1/$14MM potential closer, but missed most of last year with an elbow injury. Maybe Cowser to play CF?

49. Ward, 1/$12MM
Giants aren't being seen as a team that could make a splash like in previous years.

Giants have 6 pitchers on their 40-man roster in the rehab process:
Randy Rodríguez (pitching in AFL)
Rowan Wick
Hayden Birdsong
Trevor McDonald
Carson Whisenhunt
Blade Tidwell
Wick’s option was for the league minimum, but declining his option kicks him to arbitration. They’ll have decisions to make on him, Walker, and Hentges primarily in a couple of weeks.
The #SFGiants made the following additional roster moves today:
• LHP Reiver Sanmartín designated for assignment.
• RHP Rowan Wick had his club option declined for the 2027 season. He remains under team control.
There's always going to be a concern that a 39 year old closer will lose a tick of velo and that will be curtains. But this is the area you're mining if you're not willing to pay a substantial sum for a reliever
Yes and no. He has a 1.3 HR/9 over the last two years with a career mark at 0.88. But on a pitch level data, he still held batters to a .194 xBA and saw his K-rate rebound. Fwiw, his ERA has far out-performed his FIP and xFIP over the last eight years
Raisel Iglesias will be expensive– he made $16MM last year and is coming off a great year. David Bednar will come on a huge contract. Evan Phillips has been a closer in the past and could also be an option.
If the Giants want to get their proven closer at a relatively decent cost, Kenley Jansen makes a lotta sense. They were linked to him in 2022.
Was doing a cursory scan of what FA pitchers could exceed GenPub expectations. Most of these guys are without a QO: Skubal, May, Gray, Griffin
Rogers got one. Holmes missed too much time to get 2 WAR. Severino opted in.

FA, with 2.0+ fWAR in 2026, without a QO attached:
Tarik Skubal
Luis Arraez
Ty France
Jazz Chisholm Jr
Sonny Gray
Kevin Gausman
Nick Martinez
Dustin May
Michael Soroka
Michael King
Ian Happ
Foster Griffin
Mauricio Dubón
Casey Mize
Tyler Mahle

Today, the Yankees have extended a qualifying offer to RHP David Bednar.
Additionally, the Yankees have added INF/OF Marco Luciano to the 40-man roster.
The general rule for tendering QOs is that you do it if it is likely that the player could receive a $50MM or greater contract. So whatever 3/$39MM deal you thought Morejon was getting can be thrown out the window (he’s likely getting 3x that money)
Unsurprisingly, Giants would have to give up substantial compensation to acquire the top-of-market closer in Bednar. Also true for Adrian Morejon, if teams don’t see him as a starter.
