As South Asians, we have not yet fully appreciated Amartya Sen’s multidimensional and multidisciplinary contributions.
Beyond his paradigm-changing economic writings on development, he has significantly influenced other fields of knowledge, including ethics, social justice theory, identity politics, feminist thought, secularism, and cosmopolitanism. His well-argued political and cultural writings interrogating Hindutva ideology, Tagore, Hindu-Muslim unity, Bangabandhu (whom he called not just “Friend of Bengal” but also “Friend of the World” in an LSE seminar), and Bangladesh are constant sources of intellectual inspiration.
We wish him a long, healthy, and creative life.

It took 58 yrs for a Dalit, Dr. Ram Chandra Dome to enter this elite club. In 1977 when Jyoti Basu formed Govt in Bengal, initially it didn't have a single Dalit Minister. However Kanti Biswas was appointed later.
S Gurumurthy once claimed between the 1977-1982 Bengal Govt - Brahmin 35%, Kayastha 31% & Vaishya 23%, Dalit 1.5% constituted in Jyoti Basu's first Ministry. Though I cannot accept this claim at face value without checking it, but also cannot reject it outright. As a Bengali myself, I have an understanding of the Bangali Bhadralok society.
Meanwhile, allover India when the Scheduled Caste representation in the governing bodies were increasing, bhadralok Jyoti Basu literally choked this idea of rightful representation of the marginalised under the garb of Communists don't believe in caste and Bengalis don't follow caste logic. Between 1977 to 2011 the Left Front ministries had miniscule number of Dalit Ministers.
Ironically, West Bengal shares one of the highest percentage of Schedule Caste ~24% in India. Is their condition drastically different from other states in the country? The data says otherwise.
Earlier Bengal had substantial Dalit movement. In fact, one of earliest Dalit protest movement against the Upper Caste tyranny in India emerged in Bengal first (Namasudra Movement - 1872).
Then partition happened. While the Congress was always dominated by UC leaders, the left movement dominated by UC leaders, later took control over every social institutions, and turned Bengal into a 'Party Society'. Every caste question subsumed into Class. And this is same even today.
Famously during Mandal Commission Jyoti Basu said "There were only two castes in West Bengal, the rich and the poor.”
Precisely incorrect. Just one example, in Bengal intra-caste marriage is 90.6%, more than the national avg. (Census 2011).
The Education disparity also telling....
So, before questioning or attacking Dr Ambedkar, which the left has been doing since he was alive, should introspect first, leaving aside what Dr Ambedkar said or practiced. Hope, the top leadership is doing it already.
