Realtor.com's Let America Build campaign has brought Inman, Zillow, eXp, the NAHB, Habitat for Humanity and 11 other groups behind a shared goal: Educating the public on why America is short roughly 4 million homes, and what unlocks more of them.
The sticking point is one most of the industry agrees on — that zoning, permitting and regulation are throttling supply. The campaign gives that consensus a public face and ties it to the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which rewards cities that streamline permitting.
The open question is whether consensus translates into homes. Realtor.com isn't alone in trying — JPMorgan Chase and Airbnb have launched their own housing funds — but awareness campaigns and real units are different things.
Housing supply is a non-partisan issue, and our coverage is too. We're reporting the effort, not endorsing a political position.
