NEW INVESTIGATION 🚍: Baltimore City is the only district in the state that doesn't offer most students a yellow bus ride after elementary school. When that policy collided with school choice, it turned getting to class on time into a nightmare. thebaltimorebanner.com/educa…

This past Valentine’s Day, 71-year-old Brad Reese, proud grandson of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups inventor H. B. Reese, posted a scathing open letter to the manager of corporate brand and editorial at Hershey, accusing the company of unforgivably altering many Reese’s products by replacing real chocolate with compound chocolate — basically using vegetable oils instead of cocoa butter to lower costs and replacing real peanut butter with “peanut-butter-style crèmes.” “And Reese wasn’t alone in feeling like everything was getting worse,” writes Rachel Handler. “Everyone in my life I spoke to agreed that something was amiss, that Reese’s — and commercial chocolate in general — didn’t taste the way it used to.” Handler would spend the next several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex, encountering dozens of eccentric characters, all disagreeing about the fundamental question of what chocolate even is and who it should be for. “I learned that — not to sound like a LinkedIn guy — what’s going on with chocolate is a parable for the modern world. That at this particularly bleak end stage of capitalism, everything we once treasured has or will lose its essential essence and MrBeast will always be involved somehow.” For our cover story, Handler takes a deep dive into the molten belly of the chocolate world. Black millennials are the prime working adult population in the community and only 2% of us make $100,000+. There are about 9 million working Black millennials, so this means that less 200,000 of us in the entire country are six-figure earners. Add fractured households to that

Inflation has nearly wiped out all wage gains since January 2025. That's how big of gamechanger the war in Iran has been on Americans' finances. Since January 2025: CPI Inflation has grown +5.4% Wages (average hourly earnings) +5.5% This is a very different picture from President Trump's first term when wages were up over 15%, well above about 8% inflation. It helps explain the frustration many households feel right now with the economy.

Derrick Henry is unlike any running back we've ever seen. Was lucky enough to work with the legend @ASchatzNFL AND the legend @kylegoon for two great pieces in @BaltimoreBanner on Henry's pursuit of history. thebanner.com/sports/ravens-…

After we made models that projected when Derrick Henry will run down Emmitt Smith’s records, we brought them to Derrick and his trainer. What did they think? “I got a long ways to go. … Either way it goes, he [Smith] is staying comfortable.” thebanner.com/sports/ravens-…

We did something fun with @ASchatzNFL and @Invisibae — we think we know the weeks Derrick Henry will become the NFL’s rushing touchdown and rushing yardage leader. Aaron made the model. Greg made interactive charts. Now you can circle your calendar: thebanner.com/sports/ravens-…

NEW from me: Over the last four years, America has lost more than 200k jobs in creative fields like publishing, film, TV, or graphic design. It's the worst stretch for arts jobs outside of major recessions. How much is AI to blame? And can the arts' business model survive?🧵
