What happens in Iran does not stop at its borders. It matters to all of Europe.
Today at the European Parliament, Iranian opposition leader @PahlaviReza and EPP Group Vice-Chair @fxbellamy MEP held a press briefing. They were joined by family members of victims of the January massacres. Discussions focused on the threat posed by the Iranian regime to Europe and the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom and democracy.
As MEP @fxbellamy stressed:
“The fall of the mullahs’ regime would be a liberation for the Iranian people and a major turning point for Europe’s security and freedom. The destinies of Iran and Europe are intertwined.”
The future of Iran matters, and Europe cannot look away.

Těší mě, že moje dlouhodobá práce na podporu svobody, demokracie a lidských práv v Íránu má konkrétní odezvu i mezi představiteli íránské opozice.
O to více si vážím, dnešního setkání s @PahlaviReza, s jedním s nejvýraznějších představitelů íránské opozice, se kterým jsem dnes měla příležitost diskutovat o současnosti i budoucnosti Íránu. Věřím, že budoucnost Íránu musí stát na absolutním respektu lidských práv a demokracie.
V Evropském parlamentu se situaci v Íránu věnuji dlouhodobě. Prosazuji konkrétní iniciativy, upozorňuji na porušování lidských práv a pravidelně jednám s představiteli íránské opozice. Věřím totiž, že pokud chceme skutečně přispět ke změně, nestačí jen přijímat rezoluce a vydávat prohlášení. Musíme být aktivní, vést dialog a hledat konkrétní možnosti pomoci.
O budoucnosti Íránu ale musí rozhodnout sami Íránci a Íránky. Svobodně, bez strachu a bez nátlaku.

Goed om vandaag kroonprins en Iraans oppositieleider Reza Pahlavi @PahlaviReza persoonlijk te ontmoeten en te spreken in het Europees Parlement.
Samen met collega's heb ik er al langer voor gepleit om ook zíjn moedige stem in het Europees Parlement te laten horen.
Zijn naam werd op de Iraanse straten gescandeerd door de miljoenen moedige demonstranten van wie tienduizenden bloedig werden afgeslacht door de huidige machthebbers.
Jarenlang bleef Brussel praten met een regime dat zijn eigen bevolking bloedig onderdrukt. Die aanpak is mislukt. We moeten de democratische oppositie en de Iraanse diaspora betrekken bij de weg naar een vrij, democratisch Iran.
Daar blijf ik mij voor inzetten: een democratische overgang, met ruimte voor verschillende politieke overtuigingen en uitzicht op duurzame vrede en stabiliteit in het Midden-Oosten, in het belang van Nederland en van Europa.
Met één helder uitgangspunt: de Iraniërs bepalen zélf hun toekomst.

Iran's exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi urged European leaders on Wednesday to support the Iranian people rather than hope for a change in the Islamic Republic's behaviour.
"You would be better off investing in the Iranian people than hoping the Islamic Republic will change its behaviour," Pahlavi told a news conference at the European Parliament. He called on political parties across Europe and the United States to support Iranians seeking political change.
Pahlavi said his recent meetings with European officials showed growing awareness of the threats posed by the Islamic Republic to other countries. He argued that Iran deserved a secular democracy rather than religious rule and warned that Tehran's threats now extended beyond Iranian opposition figures to citizens of other countries.

Now underway at the European Parliament, Prince Reza Pahlavi and @fxbellamy MEP, Vice-Chair of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group, will hold a joint press conference on the growing threat posed by the Islamic Republic to Europe and the urgent steps Europe can take to support the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom.
They will be joined by Danial Eyvazi, a survivor of the January 2026 massacar, as well as Sara Sadeghi Mohseni and Arsalan Khoubi-Pour, whose brothers were killed by the regime’s security forces.
Europe will hear directly from a survivor, and from the families of those whose voices the Islamic Republic tried to silence.

I had the pleasure of welcoming Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi to the European Parliament (together with @SebastianMEP) for a meeting with Members of the ECR Group. I was pleased to see the interest his return drew among colleagues.
For many Iranians, the Crown Prince represents hope that their country can finally turn a page. I respect his determination to bring Iranians together around a future in which they can live freely and build their lives at home. The Islamic Republic has already taken far too much from generations of Iranians. Europe should stop assuming that the country must remain in the hands of its present rulers.
Europe’s own security is also at stake. The regime’s threats against dissidents on our soil demand a firm response. Alongside confronting those threats, European governments should engage seriously with those working for a free Iran.
That engagement should include both political support for the democratic opposition and practical help for Iranians to overcome the regime’s information blockade and access a free internet.
Iran has an extraordinary history and enormous potential. A free Iran would offer its people new opportunities and Europe the prospect of a partner with whom we could trade and cooperate in peace.
That is why I invited the Crown Prince. I want Europe to be ready for that future and willing to help bring it closer. Today’s meetings gave me greater confidence that more colleagues share that ambition.
It is time to free Iran from the yoke of political Islam.

Their discussion focused on practical measures the EU could take to support the Iranian people, from imposing further sanctions on the Islamic Republic to helping Iranians maintain access to a free and resilient internet.
As the Prince noted, David McAllister is a true friend of the Iranian people and their struggle for freedom and democracy.
It was a pleasure to meet again with @davidmcallister , Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.
I appreciate his deep commitment to the people of Iran and support for freedom and democracy. We discussed a range of measures the EU could take from further sanctions to support on internet connectivity. David is a true friend of our cause.

Ja, es gab ein Fenster, einen Augenblick, einen Zeitabschnitt, in dem vorstellbar war, dass das ungleiche, widersprüchliche und mutige Triumvirat aus Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump und Shah Reza Pahlevi II das IRGC im Grund und Boden Bomben könnte, der Iran befreit würde, seine Allianz mit Israel neu und begründen würde, die eiserne Umklammerung des iranischen Terror in der Region verschwände und in den nächsten Jahren mehrere Abraham Accords unterzeichnet würden, dass die Terroristen ausgetrocknet und entwaffnet würden und es Frieden geben könnte.
Es scheint, als wäre in dieses Zeitfenster jedenfalls geschlossen.
Aber vielleicht kann es so ähnlich sein. Als jemand, der erlebt hat, wie der Kalte Krieg und die Teilung Europas durch einen pfälzischen Kanzler, einen in Europa verlachten amerikanischen Präsidenten und einen Papst beendet wurden – da hatten wir ein noch ungleicheres, unwahrscheinlicheres Triumvirat aus dem hl. Karol Wojtyła, Ronald Reagan und Helmut Kohl am Werk. Jede Andeutung, es könnte so kommen, hat damals Lachkrampfanfälle in meiner Umgebung ausgelöst.
Geschafft haben die drei es trotzdem.

Idag har jag för andra gången träffat den iranska kronprinsen Reza Pahlavi, den samlande kraften inom oppositionen i Iran.
Hans budskap är tydligt: Islamistregimen måste störtas inifrån, av det iranska folket. Men mod räcker inte. Det krävs också organisation, samordning och möjligheter att kommunicera utan att riskera livet.
Det iranska folket visar gång på gång sin vilja att kämpa för friheten, trots regimens brutala förtryck. Frågan är vad vi i västvärlden är beredda att göra för att hjälpa dem.
Det handlar om att ge den demokratiska oppositionen politiskt stöd, men också om att bryta regimens informationsblockad och säkerställa tillgången till fritt internet. Utan möjlighet att kommunicera och organisera sig försvåras också kampen för ett fritt Iran. EU kan och borde hjälpa iranierna med detta.
Men vad som är verkligt anmärkningsvärt är att EU:s utrikeschef Kaja Kallas vägrar att träffa Reza Pahlavi. EU säger sig stå bakom det iranska folkets rätt till frihet och demokrati. Hur går det ihop med att samtidigt avvisa dialog med en av de mest framträdande företrädarna för den demokratiska oppositionen?
Därför har jag idag ställt två skriftliga frågor: en till den höga representanten om hennes vägran att träffa Pahlavi och en till kommissionen om vilka konkreta åtgärder den vidtar för att ge iranierna tillgång till fritt internet.
Solidaritet med det iranska folket kan inte stanna vid fördömanden och deklarationer. Den måste omsättas i handling.
Det iranska folket har redan visat sitt mod. Nu måste Europa visa sitt.
