One Irish radio presenter suggested that Sydney Sweeney has “set women’s sport back 40 years in 40 seconds⁠”. What a remarkably low opinion of women’s sport. There’s something quite sexist about treating decades of women’s achievements as so fragile that an actress’s cleavage can undo them. We’ve had David Beckham’s underwear adverts⁠ going back to 2003⁠. The sexual marketing of male and female athletes has a long history. Evolutionary psychology offers several plausible explanations for why Sydney Sweeney irks women so much. Sweeney’s appealing so brazenly to heterosexual male desire seems uniquely morally suspect to some. In doing so she is implicitly seen as somehow betraying other women. First, Joyce Benenson’s work suggests an unwritten rule of female competition is “compete, but don’t make it too obvious that you’re trying to outshine other women”. The evolutionary logic is that mothers’ survival mattered enormously to dependent children, favouring competitive tactics that minimise injury and retaliation while preserving social support. Consistent with this hypothesis, research finds tendencies among girls and women to downplay achievements, to feel uncomfortable outperforming friends, and to favour equal rewards or “levelling” a stronger competitor’s advantage. The pressure is to soften your successes and preserve the appearance of equality. Sweeney’s approach openly violates that expectation. She conspicuously capitalises on what men find attractive. That directness may help explain why the criticism becomes collective and moralised: “pick me”, “not a girl’s girl”, “setting women back”. Her appeal to men is depicted as disloyalty to women. Women’s collective condemnation enforces this unwritten rule. The woman who gains male attention too openly must pay a price in losing female approval. Appeal to men that aggressively, and you forfeit the sisterhood’s support. Another complementary evolutionary explanation is a possible extension of sexual economics theory. Women worry “If she gets rewarded for this, will the rest of us feel pressured to do it too?” Finally, if you were silent about biological males competing in women’s sport, yet regard this advert as a catastrophe, your priorities deserve scrutiny.
