Staying up late in the evening is still "you" time. Once you wake up in the morning you're back on company time. The morning belongs to your job The night belongs to you. People like staying up late. It makes them feel they have more time for themselves.

One thing I learned from working is that companies don't change. If you work for a place that got big in 1990, you effectively work in the 90s. Big corporations settle like sediment and produce strata in the economic geology.

Wake up. Every profession deemed white-collar, the middle class dream, is about to be decimated by AI, at a much faster pace than anticipated, with monstrous social consequences.

For a lot of people. The dream is to own a home. Buy things and put them in the home. And not go anywhere. Surround yourself with stuff. People. Kids. Pets. Like a castle
As an extrovert, some of these blow my mind. 26% of Americans didnโ€™t go out for breakfast a SINGLE time in 365 days? 54% didnโ€™t go to a sports game and 51% didnโ€™t go to a bar/tavern even once? Even with the increase, 68% of adults didnโ€™t attend a single concert? Are there people out there that just donโ€™t do anything??

A sports team is supposed to be tied to a city forever. The city and the team are one. Even if the team loses money or it gets relegated to lower divisions. Sports is not supposed to be a normal business where you just move to a new city and create a new fandom. This is how it has worked since forever. This is why I'm glad to see gambling completely take over pro sports in America. It's built on a non-lindy foundation. It needs to be corrected.
It's so weird that amidst the 21st century tech boom, the Bay Area has actually *lost* pro sports teams since apparently none of these tech geniuses is normal enough to want to be a local hero and own a baseball team.

Historians will look back at the last 150 years see the 2 day weekend, the 8-hour workday and the post-Covid shift to remote and hybrid work as part of the same long story. Modern workers carving out a little more room for lives of their own.
My strongest โ€œvibes not evidenceโ€ belief is that remote work is a cancer thatโ€™s making (most) people miserable even though it seems better in the short term.

The best reason to read ancient history isn't to memorize dates. It is to realize that human nature hasn't changed at all. The arrogance, jealousy, power struggles, and public anxiety we experience on screens today were all documented thousands of years ago.

Another way the current administration is trapped in the ZERO-SUM FALLACY: The H-1B visa situation. + You are NOT taking a job from a citizen, rather creating jobs by increasing overal economic output. Plus these people (even vegetarians) SPEND locally. + The US has long been benefiting from other countries' brain drain; without it its edge wd collapse. Tesla, Von Braun, von Neumann, Fermi & Einstein did NOT each take the job of a citizen. + It the problem is anti-Indian racism, say it, don't play games.

Knowing things in general tends to make it harder to talk to โ€˜normal peopleโ€™ about these kinds of hot topics - Foreign policy - History - Economics - Religion All favorites for folks to discuss, but people typically have strong feelings and low information
knowing economics alienates you from left wing friend groups itโ€™s crazy. i explain how a thing works in america and itโ€™s always โ€œno but it shouldnโ€™t be that wayโ€ like ok sure thereโ€™s drawbacks i agree. and then you ask what the solution is and they just say โ€œnot do thatโ€

I saw of video of Ethan Hawke lamenting how he's not reading half as much as he once did. This is a much deeper and darker pattern. Some of the most avid readers I know, lifelong readers, have basically stopped. They hate it and can't even explain it, the fire's just gone out

There is NO justification ever, under ANY moral code or international law, for one country to purposely destroy entire villages of another country, let alone during a "ceasefire." These are barbaric war crimes, streamed to the world.

To the performative, boring, "detail oriented" class: Now is the time to start learning real skills, competence. Take the pay cut, sabbatical, wtv. But you should actually know a field deeply than just what you've been told to learn, else you are just overpaid and borrowed time

๐Ÿšจ๐ŸŽ™๏ธToni Kroos on Bruno Fernandes: "This match just showed that Bruno Fernandes has always been a problem for Portugal. His stupid decision to stop playing good football as a midfielder whenever Ronaldo is on the pitch has cost Portugal a lot. In today's game you could clearly see Bruno playing passes into the final third and even providing two assists but whenever Ronaldo was on the pitch, some how the passes are played to the Goal keeper (Laughs). At some point, you have to ask yourself why."
