The new collection edited by @LeithDavis & Kevin James is now up for pre-order, and it's 30% off with the code NEW30 at @EdinburghUP. My chapter on #Jacobite witness networks appears alongside a wonderful collection of esteemed historians and scholars.

Volunteers have found impacted musket balls where government forces engaged the Jacobite army 278 years ago at Blàr Chùil Lodair (the Battle of Culloden) ⚔️
Serving personnel and others are helping @NTS_archaeology uncover buttons, coins and more at the Highland battlefield.

Archaeologists are hoping techniques used during the excavation of Waterloo can help uncover new secrets at #Culloden Battlefield. A new dig at the site of the final clash of the #Jacobite Rising in 1746 is being led by @N_T_S. shorturl.at/Mdiyb

Good stuff still coming out of the ground at #Culloden. Kudos to the @NTS_archaeology team and all the volunteers for getting their knees dirty.
It's been a great second day digging at #Culloden2024 with @NTS_archaeology. Finds include coins, buttons, musket balls & pistol shot. Here's Lorne with his possible Edward I coin! It's also been a personal privilege to dig with serving personnel from Kinloss & Lossiemouth!🙏

Really interesting note from John Gordon of Avochie to Lord Lewis Gordon asking to have colours made in Aberdeen for the troops. He suggests a blue ground with a boar’s head in yellow to be made of waxed cloth ‘for defending the rain’. Aberdeen citizens were to pay for it, natch.

Incredible bequeathal from Christopher Duffy to the @N_T_S Culloden archive. Here's hoping that they make it available for students and researchers to consult upon appointment when visiting the property. (pics via NTS Culloden’s FB/Insta posts)
From the pages of @HistoryScotland's #SpotlightJacobites column is a short study on the soldiers from the British army who deserted their ranks and ended up fighting amongst their #Jacobite foes.

From Jacobean to Jacobite. A nice little case study of how memory is preserved through generations, in this case tipped by the presence of a seemingly anachronistic necklace charm. @arthistorynews @JacRiding @dparrish0 @P14Murray @NL_Heritage

This medicine chest belonged to past president of our College Stuart Threipland. He was personal physician to Bonnie Prince Charlie and this chest was used to treat patients during the 1745 Jacobite Rising, including at the Battle of Culloden

Just in time for the holiday break, my new #SpotlightJacobites essay is out in the latest issue of @HistoryScotland. This month I wrote a bit about a loyalist informer and the Lord Lyon’s attempts to secure him shelter from the disaffected populace near Inverness. @BrodieCastle
