Texas is too prideful for this to ever be done -- but any Texas vs. Texas State game *should* be played in San Marcos and called the LBJ Bowl. -OS

What's interesting about this moment to me re: AI and higher education The best AI users continously ask critical questions! Why did you give me this answer? Why isnt <this> a better approach? All that training in critical thinking skill development education is supposed to deliver, with a partner who can't become exhausted!
Universities are badly failing to meet the moment from a pedagogical perspective, and if this problem is not addressed, this (well beyond the direct economic effects of AI) will play an important role in their decline

I find this interesting. And the debate surrounding it has good points on both sides. I’m reading every post out there right now.
Anthropic says new Claude models will embed invisible watermarks in all generated text, everywhere Claude is offered. The watermark is part of the text, it isn't metadata: "it will travel with the text when it's copied and pasted elsewhere, and may persist through some editing." This starts with models launched on or after August 2, 2026, under an EU AI Act code Anthropic signed. Anthropic is still working on adding it to current models. The rollout is worldwide.

AI like many things is good in moderation. We need to stop talking about it as one large thing an instead realize it has many parts. Some parts should be used as helpful tools, while others should probably not be used at all.
One thing I’ve noticed is that we often talk about “using AI” in academia as though it’s a single behaviour. It could mean searching for papers. Finding references. Summarising literature. Brainstorming ideas. Challenging an argument. Writing a paragraph. Fixing grammar. These aren’t the same thing. I’m starting to think that some of the disagreement I see comes from people using the same words to describe completely different activities. Perhaps part of the challenge is that we’re still developing a shared language for talking about AI in academia. We debate whether “using AI” is acceptable, but often mean completely different things when we say it. What do you think?

Academic freedom is good. But @AAUP has not been a principled defender of that freedom for some time. So while this move is clearly a strategic mistake, I’m glad @ProfTWolf and his organization have proactively unveiled themselves as raw, radical, progressive partisans so the rest of us no longer have to play along with the pretending.
Apparently our first endorsement has upset some people. Good. Higher ed, academic freedom, research, collective bargaining, and the idea of college as a public good are under attack. AAUP isn't going to respond by pretending politics isn't happening. We're going to organize.

1/ No particular reason I’m sharing this today, but qual rigor is not measured by quant standards. Qual research does NOT require lrg samples to be rigorous. Saturation can be met with relatively sm samples when the question is focused, the sample is specific & the data are rich.

Hey that’s Me!! Thanks for actually signing it @kdamp!
One of the fun parts of my job is getting to sign the diplomas of our new doctoral graduates. As I sign each one, I can’t help but think about all they (and their families) must have gone through to finish. @txst had a record 126 doctoral grads this year (+58% since 2021-22)!🐾⭐️
