No better topic to present on than minimum wage to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Industrial Relations section at Princeton, the birthplace of Card & Krueger! #princetonirs100 🐯

Excited to launch the Stanford Childcare Model this week! We hope it will be useful in thinking about the relative benefits of different child care policies. We started with 8 policies, but this is intended to be a living model that can incorporate new ideas as they come!
🚼 For too many American families, finding #affordablechildcare is a serious problem. With policymakers across the country looking for solutions, @SIEPR's new Stanford Childcare Model helps them evaluate the effects of key reforms. Check it out: siepr.stanford.edu/policymod…

Grateful to @SIEPR for their interest in this topic & to the awesome team I've been lucky to work with to bring it to life - @chloergibbs, @nealemahoney, T.V. Ninan, Caleb Brobst, Abi Sanchez, and Anna Hoffman!

🚨 We launched the Stanford Childcare Model, estimating supply and demand in the early care and education market, with a dashboard comparing effects of several different childcare policies. We hope it's useful to those working on childcare affordability, access, and quality! 🚨

One of the greatest perks of this job is getting to know the next generation of economists. Please come work with me on understanding the drivers of racial gaps and wage inequality over time and around the globe. irs.princeton.edu/senior-res…

Why is private-equity interested in child care? @SenJeffMerkley is asking that question. State lawmakers, @ehaspel, @nwlc, @communitychange have been asking. England is asking. .@JHB_econ and Chris Herbst are too, and I wrote today about what they found & what might come next

Part of the reason we hodgepodge care around a part-time preschool is to avoid being somewhere that requires naps A nap means a preschooler who’s up until 9:30 or 10pm & also has a sleep schedule that’s all messed up on non-school days 🥴

Child care deserts are often framed as areas where there isn’t enough child care. But are they actually the places where it is hardest to find child care? I investigate in a new paper!

Closing dinner was at the NASCAR half of fame, and I’m happy to report that I have a back up career if the whole professor thing doesn’t work out 😆

Conclusion: It is possible to identify areas with particularly tight child care markets… …but doing so requires adjusting for proxies of demand! Full paper (“Undersupply or Lack of Demand? Evaluating Measures of Child Care Access”) here: docs.iza.org/dp18597.pdf

On a personal note, this question has been on my mind for a while & I’m excited to have finally tackled it! What I found most interesting is that it IS possible to identify areas with tighter markets, suggesting market frictions & thus a role for policy.
