SMU football GM J.R. Sandlin got his start working for Nick Saban, and one recruiting lesson has stuck with him ever since.
“You don’t want to buy a Ferrari with no engine.”
Talent only tells you so much.
You have to understand the intangibles: work ethic, durability, time management, and whether a player can thrive in a new environment.
Those details can determine whether a talented recruit actually works out. ⬇️

SMU football GM J.R. Sandlin told me that when people aren’t successful, it’s usually because they get in their own way.
The key is to constantly look for solutions instead of allowing yourself to get stuck in a rut.
Keep moving forward and find a way. 👇👇

SMU football GM J.R. Sandlin told me the first priority in recruiting is protecting the program.
That means being willing to fight for the players you truly believe in.
It reminded me of something we were taught when I coached: If you aren’t willing to fight for a recruit and put your name behind them, they probably weren’t worth taking in the first place.

SMU football GM J.R. Sandlin told me that the Mustangs have an army of 40 to 45 scouts working on the personnel side.
Some are volunteers, but everyone plays a role in gathering as much detailed information as possible.
It’s all part of a massive recruiting operation designed to keep pushing SMU forward. ⬇️
Dreams do not build futures.
Execution builds features!

Someone….
Somewhere….
Is depending on you to do what God has CALLED you to do!
RECRUITs: With limited opportunities to prove yourself, every blown play risks your trust with coaches. That’s why getting mental reps, visualizing each play, and drawing the plays is essential to your success.
Remember 90% of the game is mental. Just knowing WHAT to do when it’s TIME to do!

RECRUITs: At some point, it comes down to a CHOICE.
WILL or WON’T
Your coaches can challenge you. Your teammates can encourage you. But the CHOICE is yours.
Greatness isn’t about doing what you can’t do. It’s choosing to do what’s REQUIRED.
