The switch one took two seshes to hit, but I was finally able to run the circuit on tre flips. Felt good. #quarantine – at Long Beach, CA
Finally saw Hope. One of the most frustrating movie experiences I've had in a long time.
I was dying to see this since it ticked a bunch of my interests: Weirdo scifi, Korean Horror, Director of The Wailing (a top ten all time horror movie, maybe top 3 to be honest). Plus everyone was arguing about it which always piques my interest.
This beginning of the movie is straight-up spectacular. The first 25 minutes waste no time jumping into one of the best horror setups I have ever seen.
Our hero cop follows a trail of destruction in his small Korean town left by a "monster" that remains elusive. Always just around the next corner, never in sight.
Insanely well-done, smashed bodies killed by thrown cars or just slammed against walls at high speeds are everywhere. The look and feel of a war film (not a coincidence, as the movies references the uneasy distance from North Korea early and often).
It. Is. Spectactular.
Then the "monster" show up, and the movie drops goes form a 5/5 to a 1.5/5.
It still looks beautiful, by my god does it lose what was working. There's no way of discussing this without getting into spoilers, so consider yourself warned.
SPOILER SECTION
We find out that the monsters are aliens, and are looking for their child who is some kind of a prince(?).
Here's a list of things in the last two acts of this movie that are poorly done, baffling, or both:
- The aliens do not seem to put in any effort to find the kid, they just go rampage mode on every human they find, including the group of hunters who are our b-story.
- Speaking of, the hunters bring nothing to the table and add another hour to a movie pushing 3 hours
- Every character is the stupid character. Like, really.
- Characters make inexplicably suicidal decisions for no reason. it's hard not to just yell at the scream constantly.
- Speaking of, the aliens have language, intelligent, bullet-proof, and have Incredible Hulk-like strength. Yet every single person shoots at them at first sight, despite this never working once.
- Chainsaw autopsy scene. Maybe you want to have a little more care with a confirmed alien being?
- Group of hunters find spaceship, walk in, just start pressing buttons and climbing on everything (see: "characters make inexplicably suicidal decisions).
- Old guy alien diarrhea story
- The make a big point the aliens never killing horses and then never explain why
- Main hunter character gets thrown against a tree at least 60 feet up (twice!), seems fine, no broken ribs, gets right back in the action
- Finale action scene is extremely long and extremely pointless. Alien chases car. They shoot him and he tumbles a bit. Repeat for 25 goddamn minutes.
- Casting Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander and making them CGI aliens who speak an alien language and look nothing like themselves.
- The Chronicles of Riddick ending which comes out of nowhere, that I could not even begin to describe here without sounding like a crazy person, and sets up a sequel that would be a much different genre than the movie we just watched
I'll say this - it's stupid but watchable. And frustrating. And extremely well-shot. And has a lot of "dude on horse shooting automatic rifle" which you truly do not see very much (that was great).
Grade: D+, but it's like the smartest kid in class failing. It's all the more frustrating because the movie had so much potential.

I wish that X Premium (or Premium+) allowed you to hide the 'you might like' and 'what's happening' panels.

Currently watching The First Omen.
Boring first half, incredible and creepy second half.
If they'd cut 30 minutes of world-building in the first hour this would be an A film and would've doubled its box office.
Finally, an actually new take on The Exorcist. Plus Flanagan rocks.

Great piece.

Does anyone even look at decks anymore? I feel like 10,000x get made compared to previously and nobody is reading any of them.

HBO and A24 are officially co-producing a 6-part 'BATMAN' detective series directed by Robert Eggers.
The project will reportedly be an R-rated, highly stylized period piece set in 1920s Gotham with zero CGI.

The stone-cold coolest opening in movie history.
Michael Mann is a legend, and his ability to use music in badass ways is absolutely unparalleled.

Hence cycling for me. You need >3000 Kcal for a good life, otherwise no wine no bottarga no organ food no fermented cheese no head cheese no pork ribs no kebbe no croissants w/extra Irish butter no manousheh no tripes no steak tartare no boeuf bourguignon no baba au rhum...
If you try to eat less than ~2,500 kcal/d, you're *supposed to be* hungry.
Man just wasn't built to live off <2,500 kcal/d.
From an evolutionary standpoint, here's how it's supposed to work...
Caloric intake falls, paleolithic man sitting around fire gets hungry.
This hunger motivates him to *move*...
Sometimes over very long distances in search of food.
Trying to ignore or suppress this signal (or the resultant outcome -> extended movement) is suppressing the natural biological balance of your body.
Hunger -> Move -> Find food.
This is the natural satiety cycle.

It’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that’s just how it is sometimes 🤷🏻♀️
I feel happy that I got to show Elon how it feels to be deeply understood, nurtured, and peacefully loved with stability and gentleness. Given the tumultuous nature of his early life, his often tortured soul, and how hard he fights for humanity I wanted him to feel the deepest and most stable form of love this world can provide. My heart is full knowing I got to do that, and I hope it leaves a lasting good effect.
We were always his safe space. A place where all of us were overjoyed to see him and one that was always full of happiness and love, not war, in contrast to his otherwise militant existence (a needed break from the battlefield where he could recharge his heart and soul before heading back out)
I loved being that counterbalancing place of safety, sense of calm, and love — and delighted in bringing a smile back to his face when he was down. I will miss him dearly.
I’ve loved him more than life itself and he’s taught me 100 lifetimes of knowledge and made my cup overflow with life meaning, so there is a lot of loss, but luckily we created four beautiful little loves of my life ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I am so beyond grateful for our children and they make every single day the best day of my life! I do hope and pray he and I can be great friends and coparents.
I’m hurting, but care deeply about E and will always be cheering for his happiness. God speed, Elon, the world is lucky to have you.
