Two lawyers can know the same Law and charge completely different fees.
One charges โฆ50k and struggles to convince clients that his services are worth it.
The other charges โฆ2 million without needing to explain himself twice.
The difference isnโt necessarily intelligence, experience, or legal knowledge.
Itโs positioning.
One is desperate to be chosen. The other has built a practice where not everyone gets access.
One negotiates his worth. The other has established it.
And this is exactly why some lawyers keep wondering why their practice isnโt progressing despite having clients and handling matters every other week.
You donโt necessarily need 100 clients. You need 10 clients who can pay you properly.
You donโt need to accept every brief that comes your way. You need to build a practice that attracts valuable, well-paying engagements.
Your legal knowledge determines what you can do. Your positioning determines what people are willing to pay you to do it.
Never underestimate the power of positioning.

A client who cannot afford your professional fees is not necessarily a bad person.
But a lawyer who keeps working without getting paid is creating a problem for himself.
Compassion is important. So is financial discipline.

Yesterday, I came across one of my female friends from the University of Nairobi (UoN) Law School. She is an Associate at a prestigious law firm in Kenyaโs Wall Street. I asked her how she managed to rise to the top. Overcoming the tribal structures in big law firms and going against the belief that young advocates canโt secure positions there.
Her answer was interesting. She told me that it is more than just performance. For example, she was not at the top of her class. The best mark she scored in the CLE exams was a 62. She didnโt tell me what exactly helped her get the position. And surely it is not tribal connections, since she is a Luo in a firm dominated by Kikuyus. She still hasnโt given me a clear answer. It canโt even be performance, because she canโt confidently express herself.

Somewhere out there is a lawyer who genuinely enjoys every meeting, every client call, every court appearance, and every Monday morning. I need to know what drugs they're on.
