The Laws of Burgos (1512) and the New Laws (1542): These were the first legislative codes in colonial history drafted to protect Indigenous people from abuses by *encomenderos*, regulate their working hours, prohibit their enslavement, and guarantee them fair wages.

Borra desgraciado.

No native slaves. Strictly forbidden by the Crown.
The slaves came from Africa, that's true, but not American natives. They were evangelized and became new spanish in the new provinces. And that's the legacy every time you see a hispanic.

Leyenda negra

Slavery of Indians (aboriginal Americans) was literally illegal since 1500 by the laws of Burgos, introduced by Spanish queen

I asked the AI: Which European country respected Native Americans the most and granted them rights?
From a strictly legal, legislative, and institutional perspective, Spain was the European empire that earliest and most formally recognized the rights, humanity, and legal status.

Solamente tu arrogancia supera tu ignorancia.
