For @NYTmag, I wrote about Germany's halting efforts to build up its armed forces in the face of ingrained societal skepticism of the merits of military power. Germany’s reluctance has a lot to do with the Nazi past. But there's also a lot more to it. nytimes.com/2023/01/24/magaz…
How many historic defeats can Merz’s conservatives endure before the chancellor is forced to step aside? That’s one of the key questions going into elections in eastern Germany on Sunday. Our story here: politico.eu/article/germany-…

Manuela Schwesig, a popular center-left politician, is within striking distance of stopping the far-right’s advance in former East Germany.

The man leading the charge to make Germany proud again won’t say he wants his fellow Germans to “forget” the Nazi past.
But that is where his ideas invariably lead.

Backlash against Germany’s politics of remembrance is nothing new. But far-right ideologues seeking to end the so-called “guilt cult” could soon gain tangible power to reshape the country’s postwar identity. My profile of Hans-Thomas Tillschneider. politico.eu/article/hans-tho…

Germany’s far right is betting that an unabashed embrace of nostalgia for life behind the Iron Curtain will help propel their rise to power in the country’s East.

Friedrich Merz is trying to convince voters he is delivering the sweeping reforms he has long promised to revive the German economy.
But they are unlikely to deliver the political inflection point needed to stop the far-right AfD’s advance.

The Kremlin appears to have stepped up efforts to reinforce rising pro-Russia forces on Germany’s far right as Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s popularity plummets.

As German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s popularity plunges to new lows, he is traveling the country to persuade Germans that things remain on the right track.
It’s not going well.

Surreal and maddening to see our friend in a glass cage in a Moscow courtroom. An innocent man—decent, kind, and honest—arrested for doing his job. Every day he spends in jail is an outrage. nitter.cf/PjotrSauer/status/1648…

So many stories like this: woman writes me to say her brother was detained by Russian soldiers at home in village outside Kyiv. Others saw him, hands tied, led at gun point to building Russians used as base. Four days later his body was found by side of the road, shot in back.
