Big up Alice Munro. I read this collection about 10 years ago & I now literally get goosebumps reading the wikipedia synopses, they're that vividly lodged in my memory. I've never read short stories as breathtaking as hers.

I'm going to carry on taking Huberman seriously (read: eating my blueberries) ∵ -He quickly, humbly admitted his error. -It's pretty easy to fall into probabilistic fallacies, especially when you're talking without a script & trying to make things sound simple. Who hasn't?
I strive to get things right on the podcast, and if I don’t, I do hope people will point it out. I re-record audio to correct it and post corrections in the show note captions on all platforms and pinned comments on YouTube. Below is the correction now posted for the fertility episode. At the timestamp related to cumulative probability of pregnancy (2:01:30), I made a math error. The appropriate equation is 1-(1-p)^n where p is the probability of getting pregnant in a given cycle, and n is the cycle number. Therefore the equation for this scenario is 1-(0.8^6). Using the equation, cumulative probability over 6 cycles is 73.8% (rounded to 3 significant figures).

Editing tip: Keep an eye for any paragraphs in your manuscript that deal with things whereof one cannot speak. Passing over them in silence is a great way to keep that word count down! ✅
Trying to reduce your paper's word count? Other tip - apostrophe instead of 'of': "The argument of the paper" becomes "the paper's argument." Two words gone like that!

Me: Here's how to use reasoning to think a bit more carefully about the ethics of technologies. Engineering students: Can we make this idea of "logically following" more precise? And don't we need more ethical premises to support our ethical premises and so on ∞?🤯 Me: @TUDelft

Absolutely loving @JeffrSebo's 𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗦, 𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗩𝗘𝗦. One of those books that simultaneously makes want to (a) spend several lifetimes reflecting on fundamental philosophical questions and (b) change the world.

Killing birds through horrific factory farm conditions has a downside: you have to walk to pick them up and put them in the bin. No worries, we've got a solution. Use the Chicken Reaper. It's user friendly! Less walking! Convenient! Call us today, then put your feet up!
The US chicken industry has an annualized mortality rate of 44% -- about 9X higher than backyard flocks. Some might worry about the farm conditions that cause so many birds to die. But the industry worries more about how to remove them -- and the Chicken Reaper is the answer.

This example is bit on the nose for an academic journal, don't you think?

I've heard anecdotally that some professors are using LLMs to mark essays. Professors doing this have heard of "jailbreaking", right? See if you can spot the simple grade-maximizing technique I found that works on GPT3.5... 🤡🤡🤡🤡

How to promote "impactful" humanities research: UK—Create a massive beaurocratic exercise that pisses everyone off and promotes a reductive, gamified notion of impact. NL—Ask researchers for advice on issues where human values are pertinent. Create extra grants for such work.

Nice little paper from Deonna & Teroni -Uses some nice observations about "emotional sensitivities" to defend their view that nonevaluative evidence can justify emos -Argues that emos give us epistemic goodies due to modulatng attention & are needed for graspng some eval concepts

1 reason I didn't apply for jobs in America is because I didn't want to have to fly the whole fucking time. I'm currently 15months flight free, having taken trains & boats from Scotland to conferences in Netherlands, Sweden, Czech Republic & a wedding in Hungary. Next up: Lisbon!
Why can't academics give up flying? We identified cultural, individual, and organizational reasons academics think we can't decarbonize research production. Especially relevant as more conferences & workshops return to offline-only formats. nicholaspoggioli.files.wordp…
