It takes a lot of energy to build an electric vehicle – so are EVs actually cleaner than their gas-guzzling counterparts?
According to a new report by @BloombergNEF, the answer is a resounding yes.

Battery prices across sectors have converged in recent years, which is an indication of the industry’s maturation and growth. The price differences across sectors can be attributed to differences in maturity and order volumes, but also cell and pack design requirements. (4/5)
James Frith retweeted
The drop in battery prices is attributed to lower raw material costs due to significant growth in production capacity across the value chain. Meanwhile, demand may have fallen short of industry expectations.

The average battery pack price number is a result of more than 300 survey data points that BNEF collected from buyers and sellers of batteries from various sectors. China's e-bus and commercial EV sector had the lowest prices at 100/kWh, while prices for BEVs were $128/kWh. (3/5)

What's next? Battery prices are expected to closely follow the trajectory of raw material prices in the near term. In the long-term, battery pack prices are expected to fall below $100/kWh in 2027.

From Nickel-Free to Dash of Nickel: The Evolution of Our Next Energy Gemini Battery Pack 🔋📊
In the ever-advancing world of EVs, Our Next Energy’s “Gemini” battery is a revolutionary breakthrough. This innovative battery combines LFP cells with anode-free cells, acting as a range extender for those occasional longer journeys while maintaining safety.
The early Gemini prototype was first integrated boosting the Tesla Model S range from 652 kms to an astonishing 1210 kms and the BMW iX SUV's range from 630 kms to a remarkable 966 kms. This initial prototype excluded Ni and Co chemistries in the high-energy anode-free cells, as initially advertised (Left side Image).
Recent updates reveal that the Gemini anode-free cells now utilize a Li-rich Lithium Manganese Nickel Oxide (LMNO) cathode and remaining Cobalt-free (Right side image). Additionally, the battery pack has slashed Lithium usage by 20 %, Graphite by 60 % and Nickel by a significant 75 % compared to a similar energy density NMC variant battery pack. These improvements come alongside impressive energy density of 1007 Wh/L and a specific energy of 432 Wh/kg. I assume the cycle life for the anode-free cells might be less than 300 cycles. That should be plenty for occasional longer journeys 🚗🔋 #battchat @LimitingThe @OurNextEnergy1

Not surprised but angry at yet another dumb decision by the crumbling, corrupt, inept current administration in their increasingly desperate last days. Short sighted, self harming hints about removing the 2030 ban on sales of new combustion engine vehicles.

If there’s one thing car companies hate, it’s uncertainty. Today’s announcement to row back on the 2030 EV target will have spooked a number of car manufacturers who are looking at the UK as a potential destination for their investment.
