“Circumstantial liberals” concluded their book tour. 10 countries, Prague to Vancouver, Lisbon to Gothenburg. It ended appropriately in Washington D.C. where Martin Luther King once had a dream. The book's dream is that we dont think of ethnicity as a problem, but an opportunity.
My deep gratitude goes to the many colleagues who have discussed the book, commented on it, and asked questions. There is no better reward than critical engagement, with the hope that the book can be useful to those who read it.
Many are concerned about the return of Babiš to the top of Czech politics. While the results of this weekend's Czech legislative election poses its concerns, I am an optimist. I think Babiš's victory is rather Pyrrhic. Here are some thoughts: blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2…
My recent book "Ethnic Minorities, Political Competition, and Democracy" (OUP 2024) argues that minorities can help strengthen and protect democracy. I explain the lessons of the book in a podcast hosted by Licia Cianetti from the U of Birmingham

Today, many left voters feel close to 'cosmopolitans' or 'feminists', while right voters identify with 'down to earth' and 'hard working' people.
Yet, these identities have structural roots, just like class identities did.

To what extent are campaign priorities contrasted or convergent, and why? In our forthcoming @cps_journal article, @e_grossman_fr and I argue that parties converge to similar priorities because they monitor each other and take up issues from opponents 👇

It seems that Trump has won the male Hispanic vote. This shows the "circumstantial" nature of their "ethnic liberalism" -- illiberals can attract minorities when they provide them entry into the majority, effacing their minority status.
By focusing their identity on their gender (male) and perhaps religiosity, and legal status (voters are citizens), Trump managed to pull over a significant chunk of the male Hispanic vote.
The possibility to exit minority status is a great attenuating factor of ethnic liberalism. For more on the argument, see the book academic.oup.com/book/57327

What I see here is the power of minority status to level the education gap. The gap is almost nonexistent for non-white people. Minority status ‘liberalizes’ the less educated. I theorize this is “Circumstantial Liberals” doi.org/10.1093/978019890674…
