“I actually saw a report on TV about an investor who was leaving this country because people are too corrupt. We are losing out on investment opportunities because investors come from countries with a strong culture of integrity, only to encounter the opposite here in Uganda. As a result, we lose out on investments. Even those who decide to invest here often find that they have to budget for bribes. When bribery becomes part of the process, the quality of work suffers, and the results are often substandard. The person who is supposed to oversee the work may also be compromised and, therefore, may not care whether the work meets the required standards. Ultimately, it is the general public that suffers. It is bad, and it is not good.”

A lack of trust breeds fear, groupthink and weak accountability. High-performing boards thrive on psychological safety, constructive challenge and open communication. Can your board speak the truth without fear?

The Most Powerful Person in the Boardroom May Not Be the Chairperson. In our @JSConversations with @JanePBitek Jane Okot P’Bitek on The Art of Being an Effective Company Secretary, one insight stood out. “The secretary’s power is the power of influence.” Think about that for a moment. A board meets perhaps four times a year. Decisions are made, strategies are approved, and policies are adopted. But who ensures those decisions translate into action? Who notices when the spirit of a decision is lost in its implementation? Who has the courage to speak privately to a director when something doesn't feel right? And who reminds the board of its responsibilities when everyone else seems comfortable looking the other way? The Company Secretary. Yet, too often, the role is reduced to taking minutes, preparing agendas, and ensuring documents are properly filed. These things matter. But they are only part of the story. An effective #Company #Secretary understands the business, anticipates governance risks, reads the room, and knows when to speak, how to speak, and whom to speak to. As @JanePBitek explained, you don't build influence only inside the boardroom. You build it through relationships, trust, and conversations that happen long before the meeting begins. You cannot influence people who do not trust you. And you cannot be a trusted adviser if you only show up when something needs to be signed. This is why the modern Company Secretary must understand more than the law. They must understand strategy, finance, risk management, operations, and organisational culture. Their authority may not come from giving orders. It comes from helping people make better decisions. That is invisible power. The board may set the direction, but governance requires someone who helps ensure that the direction is understood, decisions are followed through, and accountability is maintained. That is the real work of a Company Secretary. #CorporateGovernance #CompanySecretary #BoardEffectiveness #Leadership @UgandaIcsa

“A secretary’s job is doable, and I’m alive to show for it. You can do it successfully and remain alive. We have a problem of integrity issues in Uganda, but the job is manageable. As I read in one of the texts during my course, ‘If you want to make people happy, don’t come for this job. Go and sell ice cream.’ Dysfunctional boards are a challenge. There is what we call boardroom culture, which may differ from the wider organisational culture. However, what happens in the boardroom usually affects the entire organisation. One of the first signs that something is wrong in a boardroom is a lack of trust among board members. When there is no trust, people become unwilling to be vulnerable. Trust has an equation: credibility plus reliability plus intimacy, divided by self-orientation.

The 60th anniversary celebration of Okot p'Bitek’s seminal 1966 poem, Song of Lawino, is scheduled for Saturday, 19th September 2026, at the Gulu University New Library in Gulu City, Uganda. The event that will kick off from 8:00am to 2:00pm marks the enduring legacy of the literary masterpiece, which integrates traditional Acholi rhythms with written literature to examine the tensions between Western colonial impact and African heritage. @RuhakanaR @GeorgeOpenjuru

Knowing your work is one thing. Communicating it in a way that builds confidence and influences decisions is another. At the ICSA Uganda Mentorship Programme, mentees put that distinction to the test through presentations, simulations and candid feedback. #Communicationiskey

The Queen mother of Tooro. No mother should ever have to bury their child. But burying two kings, one a spouse the other a son you raised, & have to bury him before his prime, shortly after burying a daughter? That pain’s unimaginable. May God comfort her bleeding heart!
