My new book Causal Inference: the Remix comes out in two weeks (Aug 25). It’s with Yale University Press like the mixtape had been. And it’s basically the 2nd edition too, but it has a different title — go figure. The online version is now up! mixtape.scunning.com

This sucks I remember flagging an ICLR 26 paper for hallucinations and it got accepted, because the hallucinations that I pointed out have been removed after my review
Paper reviewing in 2026 sucks. I flagged 9 of 11 papers for hallucinated references or authors and 2 were accepted for oral spotlights (!!!) Read @calebrob6 and my rant here geospatialml.com/posts/revie…

I’m Dr. Norman Matloff’s daughter, and it is with great sadness that I share that my father passed away earlier in June, surrounded by his family. He faced his cancer diagnosis with unflagging optimism and never stopped pursuing his passions of writing, mentoring students, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. He has left behind a legacy: generations of UC Davis graduates in his 40+ years teaching, open source software and tutorials available to anybody, a body of technical work in research publications, software packages, and books. The lively discourse that he had with all of you on this platform gave him great pleasure, and he felt genuine connections with many of you here. He will be so very missed. May his memory be a perpetual blessing.

Just remembered the story about a computer scientist who had his bike stolen and tried to explain binary search to a cop

New working paper! Have you ever wondered how the way you form friendships, partnerships, etc affects the structure of how society as a whole interacts? It turns out that even small changes to individual incentives can have huge aggregate effects! A 🧵:

After five years of driving the Diablo franchise forward with four big launches, it's time for me to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what's next. The teams are set up for success, with an exciting slate of releases ahead. I'm incredibly proud of what we've built together and looking forward to what comes next for Diablo, and for me.

Needing a permanent doi was a forcing function to revisit this article on Transformers and Graph Neural Networks. This is (very) old news, so what's new?
Excited to share a blog post on the connection between #Transformers for NLP and #GraphNeuralNetworks (GNNs or GCNs). graphdeeplearning.github.io/…

I'm teaching databases this semester at Berkeley. My students all seem unusually brilliant. Not many go to office hours, and not too many folks post on the course forum asking project questions. Weirdly, the exam had the lowest recorded average in my 10 semesters teaching it.

Can't even describe how much I hate what AI has done to the process of grading student work. I hate finding it, I hate the paranoia it fosters, I hate the confrontations with students who have used it. Nothing else in my experience has ever changed my job this much for the worse
