Replying to @adamfeuerstein
@adamfeuerstein: So do you think that Dario at some point is going to find out that biology is going to kick his ass?
Matt Gline, CEO of Roivant: I think Dario is going to find out that no one wants to go to an AI restaurant and eat an AI cheeseburger. That they want to go to an actual hospital and take an actual pill. #STATSummit

Science editor-in-chief Holden Thorpe gave the day’s first warning about the rise of science in China.
He says he can see it in the papers researchers are trying to get published in the top scientific journal he edits.
"Submissions from China continue to increase, not just in number but in quality, and submissions from the U.S. are going down,” Thorpe said.
He later added: “The atmosphere there (China) is just so much more pro-science than it is here.”
Here is a video.

U.S. health spending is on pace to cost almost $16,500 per person this year.
And the biggest portion of an employer’s health spending — even for the largest corporations in the country — has remained the same since the 1980s: bit.ly/4edjsFi

This year, $NVS acquired Avidity Biosciences and with it, a powerful new drug for a small sliver of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Now, parents are clamoring for companies to rapidly apply that technology for their own kids.

I spoke with Caribou $CRBU CEO Rachel Haurwitz last night about the gut-wrenching decision to shut down after failing to raise money to move its off-the-shelf CAR-T for lymphoma into a Phase 3 study.
“Biotech companies close all the time, usually because the idea didn’t work, or the drug didn’t work. So, you wind down. You learned something, and you move on,” Haurwitz said.
“Our experience is incredibly disappointing. Our clinical signal is strong. The benefit to patients is compelling and commercial research shows the drug could be market-leading. But all of that isn’t enough in this fundraising environment to get over the hurdle to raise enough capital,” she added.

I spoke with Lauren Holder, a Huntington's patient and advocate, about this week's $QURE AMT-130 gene therapy clinical update.
“I’m not surprised by the four-year results because this isn’t a cure,” Holder told me. “This is a slowing-of-disease-progression treatment, and so I would expect there’s still decline going on, and we’re going to see that on testing, and that doesn’t mean it’s not working.”
Holder is a lot less pleased with the proposed design of UniQure's confirmatory study, which will require some patients to be randomized to a standard treatment arm.
"It’s not ethical,” she said. “You’re requiring patients to not receive any treatments for three years or longer, and to not be able to participate in other research. To me, it’s not ethical. To the community, it’s not ethical, and I really feel we need to have a better option.”

RFK Jr. last night continued his praise of AI to fix U.S. health care, saying the technology is better informed than doctors.
But on the ground in rural America, health providers say AI is nowhere close to solving their problems:

A private equity owned hospital chain is converting to a nonprofit. On its face, it sounds like a good deal.
But who actually benefits? Quorum's hospitals will get loaded with 30% more debt while Quorum's lenders are almost made whole.
