What a loss. So sad to lose Fr Peter Henriot, S.J. What a man. What a leader he was & a serious voice of social justice. One of the fulfilling times of my work was working under Pete. My first day at JCTR, he met me half way the 2 office buildings from his office (at the back) to walk me to his office at Luwisha House. I was truly humbled by this gesture. He was such a humble, fair & transparent leader. He was never afraid to have key issues discussed in the Monday staff meeting instead of being referred to Mgt. Every time he returned from trips, he came with chocolate & candy to share with all staff members. When me & my wife lost a baby in 2010, his words & messages of comfort truly moved us. Funny thing is that he has been on my mind the last one month with one of his key lessons about working in civil society (activism) & working with govt. He always emphasised that we should cooperate but never co-opted. How civil society leaders today need that lesson. He was truly one of a kind & true believer & voice for social justice. Zambia is grateful for your voice & works including the building of JCTR . There would be no JCTR without you. Go well Pete. Rest in Eternal Peace.

Fr. Peter Henriot is largely responsible for the kind of economist I aspire to be—one overwhelmingly concerned with questions of economic justice. I discovered him on television as a teenager in the 90s, during Zambia’s tumultuous encounter with IMF structural adjustment, and I knew instantly that I wanted to pursue economics in service of justice the way Fr. Pete did. Years later, as a student at the University of Zambia, I was blessed to spend time with him. On some Sunday afternoons, he would show up to the university chapel to discuss questions of justice with students, bringing faith, rigorous social analysis, and an unflinching commitment to the poor. I hope to continue to follow in his footsteps. Rest in peace, Fr. Pete and thank you for the inspiration.
