The Conversion Practices bill “makes it a crime to say to your teenaged daughter:
I want you to love your body,
I want you to grow up to be a happy lesbian.
I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU ARE A MAN!”

Today for the 1st time @AllianceLGB are giving evidence in Parliament to the Joint Committee on the draft Conversion Practices Bill. We are so proud to be here notwithstanding the tidal wave of homophobia directed against us including from some current & former MPs.

The UK government wants to prosecute parents and clinicians who refuse to affirm the claim a child has been born in the wrong body. Today, the @AllianceLGB's Dermot Kehoe, @Jebadoo2 and @HJoyceGender warned them their proposed law could make the medical abuse of children compulsory.

“We are gay men and we consider this legislation to be anti-gay. It is transing the gay away.”
Jeff Dudgeon played a vital role in the campaign to decriminalise homosexuality in Northern Ireland. He now opposes the Conversion Practices (Criminalisation) Bill, which is before the Northern Ireland Assembly.
A founding member of the Northern Ireland Gay Rights Association, Jeff brought the first successful challenge to the criminalisation of homosexuality at the European Court of Human Rights. On 22 October 1981, the Court ruled that Northern Ireland’s law violated his right to respect for private life. The Homosexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 1982 followed, bringing the law in line with the rest of the UK.
Forty-five years later, he is campaigning against a Bill presented as necessary to protect LGBT people. As he points out, those who oppose it are routinely smeared as homophobes.
“Conversion practices” conjures up electric shock treatment and corrective rape — horrific practices that are already illegal.
So what would this Bill criminalise?
It would expose parents to prosecution, and up to two years in prison, for having honest conversations with children who are confused about their gender identity.
Gender identity issues can cause great turmoil within families. Many parents already feel pressured to affirm their child’s belief that they were born in the wrong body, for fear of damaging their relationship. The Bill would add the threat of prosecution for parents who wish to guide their child away from life-changing, irreversible medicalisation. It would rip families apart.
This is of particular concern to gay rights campaigners such as Jeff, because the vast majority of gender-confused children are same-sex attracted, and same-sex attraction often goes hand in hand with gender non-conformity in childhood.

"At the centre of their concerns is the rise of so-called “affirmative care”: an approach which treats a young person’s declared gender identity as something to be validated rather than explored. Complicating the matter yet further is the Conversion Practices Bill, which will criminalise any attempt to instigate conversations around sexual orientation and gender."
Important piece from Julie
I wrote, for @unherd, about the almost total capture of the world of clinical psychology, and the disastrous results for gender confused kids: unherd.com/2026/10/how-trans…
This is such an important point from Joyce.
"If my husband takes my phone away from me as an adult, that's coercive control, if I do that to my child that might be responsible parenting"
That's one of the many problems with the conversion bill, it treats children like adults.

A genuine concern for parents in the UK.
We know the effects similar bills have had on parents in New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Cyprus and many Europen countries through our parent support groups.

@NazShahBfd is right. Parents who refuse to affirm their child's gender identity risk being caught by the Conversion Practices Bill. 3/3

🇬🇧 On Protection Orders
Pressed on whether Protection Orders would primarily apply to parents, Galop responded “they primarily will apply to abusers.”
The question was clear, the answer was clearer. Parents that fall within the broad definitions of abuse under the Protections Orders will be treated as abusive. 2/2

Barrister @Jebadoo2 explains how a parent saying to their child they should love their body could meet every element of the Government’s proposed ‘conversion practices’ offence.
As Dennis says, all it takes is one difficult, distressing argument for a parent to be wide open to the risk of prosecution.
How can Women and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson claim the Bill “will not impinge on” parents’ ability to have difficult conversations with their children?

We are so lucky in the UK to have gay organisations like @AllianceLGB arguing against the state-enforced sterilisation of children (aka the Conversion Practices Bill). Other countries from Europe to Australia were not so lucky.
This afternoon our Vice Chair, Dermot Kehoe, gave evidence at the Joint Committee on the draft Conversion Practices bill.
Parents should never feel afraid to tell their child “I don’t believe you’re born in the wrong body… but I do believe you’re my gay son and I support you in that”.
