It can take over a decade for early observations to be adopted into mainstream medical knowledge… Excited to see @GreenJournal raising awareness of OAS w Teaching NeuroImage ~10 yr after our 1st reports @AndrewKofke @francisdeng @lsaguirre neurology.org/doi/full/10.12…

Looks like interesting reading on opioids, hippocampus, and POCD 🔓
A new collaborative study by Baskin lab just published. Disruption of hippocampal mitochondrial function underlies opioid-induced postoperative cognitive dysfunction in aged rats sciencedirect.com/science/ar… @OhioStateDHLRI

The great @ginapoe on her lab’s work on opioids and the locus coeruleus
How sleep disruption drives opiate addiction relapse: "When animals withdraw from opiates, our sleep is terribly disturbed, and the amount of sleep disturbance predicts relapse behaviors." "The locus coeruleus is covered with opiate receptors. Exogenous opiates really strongly bind these receptors and calm it down." "If you long-term reduce the number of receptors, when you withdraw the exogenous opiates, there is not enough of your endogenous opiates to reoccupy those few receptors." "The locus coeruleus has nothing to calm it down anymore. It just fires and fires and fires." "Nobody likes to live in that high-stress state and they'll do anything to get back to normal." Appreciate raising awareness of opioid-associated hippocampal injury, but this report appears to represent evolution of CHANTER; opioid-associated amnestic syndrome (OAS) is an acute syndrome on the same spectrum — not CHANTER remnants @francisdeng sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
