A list of 'best optics Unis' was published.
I have worked @uOttawa (#43) for 11 years and am proud of our contributions to optics.
I also love working closely with Rochester (#44!)
Now I'd put Rochester higher, but I'll enjoy teasing them about this.

So what does a 'lab manager' do anyways?
Well, in my case, it means knowing about all the cool Physics our groups do, while also having (genuinely) fun encounters that go a little like this:
A Contractor vs. The Sword in the Stone youtube.com/shorts/VJtV2UkU-…
That's a yes from me.
I did this a bunch as a grad student living abroad to justify going home or visiting friends for a few extra days after a conference.
I'd approach anyone whose work I respected and with whom I'd want to collaborate. We welcome visitors in the same spirit.
Hypothetically speaking, if you were planning an international trip to a region where you (kind of) know people, would you reach out & inquire about giving a talk? #sciencetwitter @Mid_Career_PI
40%Absolutely. Lots of wins.
41%Maybe. Depends.
7%No. They'd ask.

Lately, my colleagues have more stories of visa delays and poor communication from the IRCC than ever before.
It's even worse than I thought:

I've had so much trouble with this! Even when only 3 profs needed! @maryam_abc @RyanJoHogan

me: (singing) I'm working late on Friday to catch up on my backlog!
wife: The 4 y.o. pulled the projector off the wall so no video games waiting for you at home.
me: (no longer singing) I'm working late so that I'm not mad when I arrive home!
I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you near @uOttawa.
@Xiaoqin_Gao, you deserve to be treated with kindness and respect and to navigate this city without fear.
Because everyone deserves to be treated properly.
Can't believe such a racist thing just happened to me behind the university campus: A guy walking toward me yelled: F*** Chinese people, I know you are Chinese though you are wearing a mask. You people got everyone sick. Then he charged at me. Why so hard to live in peace? #scary
Got 3 separate warnings of COVID in my kids' classes Monday. We took a long look at our exhausting list of responsibilities these next weeks, and kept them home anyway. This explains why.
I used to wear a mask out of civic responsibility, now I do so out of concern for my family
More from the Creative Kanji contest: my new favourite appeals to my #optics #photonics side.
虹(rainbow) already looks like colours (色) crafted (工) together, but a wonderful 6 year-old came up with an alternative: just cap 'colour' with the number '7'!
Finding the Creative Kanji contest is the best thing to happen to me today: sousaku-kanji.com/index.html
One of this year's winners is 酒 (alcohol) but with the 氵(water radical) being changed to ノン, which is phonetic lettering for 'non'. The result: non-alcoholic!
I was never 'great' with kanji, but I love their etymologies. I just learned of a fun, cheeky annual contest for new characters!
Part pun, part social commentary and all art, these variations are incredible.
If you can't read Kanji, this helpful person explains her favourites.
Winner of 2020’s new kanji contest in Japan: the character 座 (seat), ingeniously redesigned as a neologism for “social distance.”
Note the two 人(person) radicals in the original 座are now positioned farther away from one another!

I have the privilege of working with many students, visitors and PR applicants, who are all intelligent, vibrant contributors to Canada.
Stories like these show how we ought to do a much better job of welcoming New Canadians.

I definitely haven't been doing 5 days a week (2-4 maybe?), but I have been cycling into the office across these last two Ottawa winters.
Can I call myself a 'real' winter cyclist yet? Is there some authoritative body/gatekeeper that can adjudicate (hopefully not from Finland)?
Worryingly, I think this may be right. Our whole demeanor on this has changed, but my favourite wastewater page (613covid.ca/contact/#) shows #Ottawa at Dec 24 levels and rising. Fewer masks and more people now...
I still have one kid too young to vax and a fear of long COVID.
I found out yesterday that some fellow #Ottawa people (e.g. @orad) didn't know about the wastewater COVID surveillance.
I've been glued to it for at least a year and a half, as I think it might be the best measure we have of community spread.

Wow. Talk about finding the silver (actually gold) lining in bad news!
Working with #plasmonic nanoparticles makes you appreciate even bad news. Look at those awesome tiny surface-functionalized #gold spheres!
