You’ve probably seen this famous figure above Piccadilly Circus and assumed it was Eros, the Greek god of love…
But it’s actually Anteros - the god of requited love ❤️
And there’s an even better twist: Anteros was also said to be the avenger of unrequited love. So basically… don’t play games with someone’s heart! 😂
The statue was created by sculptor Alfred Gilbert and unveiled in 1893 as part of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, commemorating Lord Shaftesbury, the Victorian philanthropist and social reformer.
So next time you’re in Piccadilly Circus, you can impress your friends with one very random London fact. 🇬🇧
