A couple things to know about the @21golfclub. • It has 9 shared greens (most people know that). • The original plan for this 36 hole club was not to build a lost Alister MacKenzie course but the terrain was a great match and slowly the idea started to solidify. The second course will be called the Hammer. • It sits on around 100 acres of land but only has 60+ acres of fairways and greens to water. • The course is a perfect example of Alister MacKenzie’s Utilitarian Era where he focused on ground formation to dictate strategy- fewer bunkers, better ground movement and adventurous greens. 21 has only 14 bunkers! • It’s the most strategic golf course I have ever played. I would argue that 9 times out of 10 you shouldn’t aim at the flag, but rather a location away from it. I am going to start putting notes on my scorecards and I have never done that before. • It has 130 feet of elevation changes but it’s not a terribly difficult walk. The two most difficult walks up to the 17 tee box and up to your approach on 17 a lot of people utiiize a cart (just for those two walks). You don’t need to use the cart those two times but you can. • If you are on the wrong spot on the green it will be insanely difficult to get down in two. I four putted twice and both times I made a mistake that I knew would hurt me. • Most of the membership are national, so if you play it - it will have limited golfers on the course. The day I played it there were a total of 12 for the day. • Right now the club is maxing out the total of golfers at 36 a day. This also allows Jordan and his team to keep the brand new course healthy. • Every round is a match. There is a scoreboard and the low round net and gross gets a ballmarker denoting their low round at 21 Golf Club. • The greens are some of the most adventurous you will ever play- so much so that they have a speed limit on them. I won’t share that speed limit but a slower green allows for some exciting pin placements. • It’s one of the best golf courses I have ever played and yet I haven’t figured it out. I had a plan on two of my more difficult holes and birdied them both. Others I am still devising a plan for. • The food and drinks are included in your host’s guest fee, meaning you can eat, drink and be merry without pulling out your checkbook. The steaks are insane! • There is a secret stash of Mt Dew on property for me. Don’t drink my Dew!!! * Photos by @JustinWheelon #GolfCourseDesign @GolfClubAtlas

It’s been a long time since I’ve played Eau Claire G&CC and I didn’t get to play it on this trip but it was a good afternoon for some late fall pics. The course looked great and the new 6th along the river will be a nice upgrade when it’s finished. The course was originally designed by Tom Vardon with more recent work by Kevin Norby completed 5-6 years ago. Eau Claire, WI is about 3.5 hours west/northwest of Milwaukee and about 90 minutes east of the Twin Cities.

The Alps at Prestwick Golf Club - on any architecture nerd’s list of the most important holes in golf, the 17th at Prestwick is at or near the top. Aside from being generally recognized as the oldest hole in championship golf, this hole, and in particular, the large hill fronting and blinding the green complex from the fairway, has inspired countless emulations around the world, following C.B. Macdonald’s adoption of the Alps as an “ideal” hole and his use of the template for the 3rd at National Golf Links.

Skokie Country Club has long been a Chicago-area favorite of mine, but until this weekend, I hadn’t been back since Brian Schneider’s recent work on the golf course. I’ve played a good bit around Chicago, in my opinion, a round at Skokie is one of the most fun you can have in this part of the world.

Today is the first full day of fall and, for those of us who live in the northeastern U.S., the start of the best 6-8 weeks of golf on the calendar. Here’s a set from the gorgeous Somerset Hills, A.W. Tillinghast’s garden state masterpiece, ablaze in autumn color. In good years, these next two glorious months of fall make the following four months of winter misery tolerable. Here’s to hoping this is one of those years.

Hey @LinksGems you sure that’s not the Lady from Beverly - still angry they did not get her a caddie 😂
A few people sent me this - apparently someone drove through the wall of the pro shop at Brae Burn CC near Boston today. I hope those two employees are OK. Looks like a tragedy was avoided by mere inches. If anyone has info they can provide, especially about those two employees, I’d appreciate it.

The last in tonight’s Raynor trifecta: the Country Club of Charleston. It’s long been an axiom in golf that if you’re going to name your club after the city it’s in, your golf course better be damn good. Any city would be proud to have this 1925 Raynor design take its name.

Observations from Sunday at Lahinch 🇮🇪 1. Wow. Stunning. Sport at its finest and what an amazing setting for it. I've covered over 200 golf events but that is right up there with the most thrilling week I've experienced. For the entire week to come down to one putt. Unreal. 2. I got up from my seat after it all finished and went to get some air outside the media center. Who was there, Josh Hill. Beer in hand, still with a stunned look on his face. I shook his hand and told him how impressed I was. Going to write up his story tonight and what he told me, but what a moment for the lowest ranked player in the event. 3. Shout out to the caddies. All longtime Lahinch loopers, randomly drawn with their players at the start of the week. Four of them from the same family, some with 40+ years experience, all with love for the place and the game. Got to meet a couple and they were delightful. They’ll have a few new stories to tell after this week. Great nugget from @IrishGolfDesk that Hill's caddie knew there was less sand in the bunkers on 18 than on the practice area. Stuff only a true caddie would know. 4. I was shocked by how many putts were left short all week, but especially today. Important, match-changing putts. I wonder if there was an element of foursomes mentality in the morning, not wanting to race putts when your partner has the comebacker but it was undeniable how many putts, from both sides, were coming up short. 5. Surveyed a few media members that know amateur golf to ask which of the players they think will go on to have the best careers on Tour. The top three picks were Russell, Weaver and Poulter. Interesting that Stout, world number one, didn’t get as much love. 6. I think Ethan Fang was probably my favourite player this week. Really sharp game, especially off the greens, and a very chilled, funny character of the course. Will definitely keep an eye on him. 7. Lahinch remains one of the world’s great golf towns. The proximity of the beach, town and course. Every pub full to the rafters of fans eager to discuss holes, shots, courses and of course, the best pint of Guinness in town. Laughed when I heard the clubhouse sold 1,200 pints of Guinness to their members on Friday. Had a local tell me “I played a few amateur tournaments in Lahinch and staying sober was more difficult than the golf course itself.” I can attest that, covering the Walker Cup too. 8. Regardless of result, the format of the event needs to change. I don’t think that’s a negative take, it’s a positive one. We need more of this. It should be three days, it should have fourballs. Going to write more on that for tomorrow. 9. Interesting to see the Walker Cup going to Bandon Dunes next in 2028. Not a traditional US style course. Will likely feel and play pretty similar to this week. And I thoroughly enjoyed this week. What a week.

Greg, I respect you and I knew you would push back. You are right that skills deteriorate when not rehearsed. No argument. But 334 starts in 72 hole events on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry. 90 made cuts against the best fields in the world. That volume of competitive reps under financial pressure does not just disappear. It becomes the floor you cannot fall below. His handicap might drift. His game under pressure does not. Most competitive amateurs play a handful of 72 hole stroke play events a year. Sposa played 334 of them for a living. The USGA created the Mid Amateur in 1981 for one reason: college players were dominating the US Amateur because they played more, practiced more, and competed more than post college amateurs who had jobs and families. The USGA looked at that gap and said the arena needs to be protected. The competitive advantage of more reps at a higher level was so obvious they built an entire championship around correcting for it. That is the same gap here. The only difference is the reps were professional instead of collegiate. If the USGA acknowledged that college players had an unfair advantage over working amateurs and created a championship to level the field, how is 334 professional starts not the same argument one level up?”

As a father who’s already taught his 7 year old to build games, research and leverage AI, I applaud this initiative. It’ll make it easier for my son to absolutely mog these other kids.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other city officials announced a sweeping new policy Wednesday imposing a one-year ban on student use of generative artificial intelligence in New York City public schools from 2-K through 8th grade, while limiting screen time for younger students and launching AI literacy lessons for high schoolers. Yet again it’s “technologies” fault that 44% - yes that’s right - almost half of all NYC students are BELOW ELA proficiency by grade level [k-8th grade] And of course Educators can use AI just not the students. #horrible thv11.com/article/news/natio…

118 years ago today on August 29, 1908 Fred McLeod won the 1908 US Open at Myopia Hunt Club. The diminutive professional stood just 5’4” moved to the United States and took a job as the head professional at Rockford Country Club. The 1908 US Open was McLeod’s lone major. In 1963, Fred McLeod along with Jock Hutchison became the first honorary starters at @TheMasters. The honor was bestowed upon these two golfers for winning the first two Senior PGA Championships which were held at Augusta National Golf Club. #GolfHistory @USGA
