My latest for @voxdotcom looks at livestock auctions: hidden spaces where animals are brutally handled, moved in and moved out no matter what. I am grateful to the undercover investigator who entered these areas to gather and expose the abuses. vox.com/future-perfect/37952…

There’s an incredible momentum on the video apps right now against the betta fish cup trade. People across the country are posting bettas dying on shelves and confronting store managers. 60+ DVMs/PhDs published an open letter and 6K have signed the petition in one week. ⬇️

The Trump administration says it’s paving the way for a “new era of animal welfare.” But it is ignoring the nearly 10 billion land animals farmed for food in the U.S. each year. @JessLReid reports: buff.ly/hjppHwX

The meat industry tries very hard to keep cameras out of factory farms and slaughterhouses -- and a new undercover video shows why. Some day, our descendants will wonder about our collective blind spot to animal cruelty. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/opini…

Fewer than 15% of veterinary school graduates are choosing jobs that include farm animals. What does that mean for the health of those pigs, chickens and cows? @JessLReid reports: buff.ly/r3JSbmi

You don’t hate fishing enough.
About two weeks ago a Florida pelican walked a quarter mile to a NOAA lab wrapped in fishing line and carrying a barbed hook in its wing, politely tapped on the door until it was discovered by scientists, patiently stood still while they operated on it, and then flew away.

It just makes me sick that media have everyone concerned about the welfare of chatbots while some of our closest relatives, who use tools and make medicines, who remember every tree in their forest and tuck their children into new nests each night, are being wiped off the planet.

Thunderstorms used to be fun. This summer changed that. Earlier this month I watched a tornado pass right before my eyes. My latest for @WinnipegNews: winnipegfreepress.com/opinio…

A reminder that vibes and science sometimes point in different directions. Plant-based alternatives have a far smaller environmental (not to mention animal welfare) impact than dairy.

Watched lightening strike a hydro pole across from my house as the loudest storm winds I’ve ever experienced tore down large tree branches. I grew up loving thunderstorms. In the age of climate chaos, my ten year old is growing up terrified of them.
Storm activity has knocked out power to approx. 6,700 customers in the Westwood and River Heights areas. Crews are working to make sites safe. Damage in some areas is extensive. No estimated restoration times just yet.

If being able to feel pain means animals are "no eaty" then we need to have a conversation about chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, goats, etc. too
Don’t eat octopus. They’re extremely sentient and have really developed pain receptors. They go in the dolphin and elephant category of no eaty

Petting zoos are a biosecurity nightmare. You can’t be anti-vax and have a petting zoo. It’s not routine to vaccinate goats for rabies but maybe all animals in petting zoos should be vaccinated? #vetmed #publichealth #onehealth

A blood-sucking critter causing human hosts to become allergic to their favorite foods? This isn’t the plot to a sci-fi movie. It’s alpha-gal syndrome.

"The horses were packed into echoing metal trailers and trucked 1,800 miles east to the pens of a hard-luck livestock trader in Ohio named Brandon Jones, who bought them for $25 each. A day later, two double-decker cattle trucks pulled up at midnight, loaded the mustangs and quickly drove off into the night. From there the mustangs disappeared. They never appeared at a public auction. The trader won’t say where they went. Wild horse advocates suspect the horses were shipped to slaughter." #wildhorses #horsegirls #mustangs

Factory farming harms animals in more ways than their cruel practices. Animals are considered collateral damage when disaster strikes. Shame.
