In our latest 'Bigger Picture' Seminar, we focus on a recent publication from @ucl, which investigates factors that determine help-seeking behaviours in older individuals who have experienced crime.

🚨New study! We teamed up with @metpoliceuk to study helpseeking in older crime victims. 1170 signposted to GPs- only 13% sought help & 4% had support by 3 months. Barriers: self-reliance, downplaying crime, accessibility. Outreach is key! @PLOSMentalHlth

Congratulations @gwestpsych on her first, first author publication! Georgia explored older victims’ perspectives on how @metpoliceuk responded to their crime report, which we hope will help the police support this group. You can read Georgia’s work here: academic.oup.com/policing/ar…
📢New research⚡️
We explored spiritual and religious beliefs in older victims to better understand how this shapes psychological responding and coping after a crime.

Are you an adult aged 60+ with recent experience of the criminal justice system? I am conducting research @BritishAcademy_ on older victim experiences & looking for people to take part in confidential interviews. Pls RT & get in touch for more info.
Fascinating article from the @guardian. In the @VIPStudy we are working with the police to improve the mental health of older crime victims. This is another great example of the benefits of non-traditional forms of mental health outreach.

Huge congrats Jess! 🎉 This is such an important area of research, concerning an age group that, as you say, has been very much neglected (up until now!). Bringing the literature together like this paints such a clear picture of how much crime impacts older people.

This important review by @UCLPsychiatry researcher @JessSatchell synthesises research on the psychological impact of crime on older victims. We hope this will be a really useful resource for those working academically and clinically with older people. Great work Jess!

Victim Survey 2022 - #HaveYourSay
Dame Vera Baird calls for victims to share their views of the criminal justice system. The survey seeks to learn about victims’ experiences of the criminal justice system in the past three years.
New @the_police_fdn report calls victim satisfaction & public confidence in police a crisis. We’re writing up findings on what older victims found helpful & unhelpful about police response & will soon be making recommendations to improve support in this group. Watch this space👀

Over the next 12 days, we're raising awareness around #VictimsRights. Under the Victims' Code, victims of crime have 12 key rights.
You should always be able to realise your rights.
Important report from @VictimsComm on impact of fraud on victims. We’ve found in the @VIPStudy of older crime victims that fraud and distraction burglary are particularly distressing. Feelings of shame, self-blame and embarrassment are barriers to seeking help.
Fraud is huge & growing. Under Covid fraud grew 24%.
The vast majority of victims will not get a criminal justice outcome. We need to know how they are being supported. My new report maps out the fraud victim landscape: who they are, what they need.

Today @VictimsComm has published her victims’ experience annual survey & the results are unsurprising and bleak. Over a third of respondents would not report a crime again. That speaks volumes. Here’s my response on what Government must do urgently to prioritise victims.
