Something has been on my mind lately. How many things do we believe about ourselves simply because somebody said them to us enough times when we were young? Think about that for a minute. A child does not enter this world believing he is ugly, stupid, annoying, difficult, strange, weak, unworthy or impossible to love. Somebody has to introduce those ideas to him. And children are terrible at questioning the people they Love. If Your father tells You that You are useless when You make mistakes, You probably are not sitting there at eight years old considering whether his own childhood, anger or insecurities might be influencing his judgment. You believe him. If people make fun of the way You look, You do not immediately understand that cruelty often says more about the person delivering it than the person receiving it. You go find a mirror. That is what bothers me. We can spend the next thirty years looking into that mirror for something that was never actually there. Somebody treats You as though You are difficult to Love, and before long You stop asking whether they knew how to Love You and start asking what is wrong with You. Somebody betrays yYur trust, and somehow You become embarrassed for having trusted them. Somebody repeatedly crosses Your boundaries, and when You finally refuse to tolerate it anymore, You wonder whether You have become a bad person. How much unnecessary suffering begins exactly like this? At some point I think every person being should sit alone and seriously examine the story they have been telling themselves about Who They ARE. Not because every criticism we have ever received was wrong. Some of it probably wasn't. We all have things about ourselves that need work. But there is a tremendous difference between recognizing something You need to change and spending Your entire life serving a sentence handed to You by somebody who Never had the authority to define You in the first place.
