Nah we're going to indoctrinate you with media theory and explain that his first 8 symphonies were significant for their use of metronome dictated tempo markings that indicate the dependence of romanticism on the regulated discontinuities of machines
Imagine studying music and being taught that Beethoven's greatest achievement was revealing the class structures of nineteenth-century Europe. That's essentially what happens in far too many English departments.

A rich essay by Malise Ruthven in @unherd today about Swift, misanthropy, the Anglo-Irish mind, and what we can and cannot learn from animals. unherd.com/2026/10/jonathan-…

I wouldn’t go this far – especially because I rate Brookner as a stylist – but I must admit to reading her in a somewhat escapist, ‘pulpy’ mode. From the first page, I feel as though I’m in a familiar world with its own rules, entirely unlike the one I actually inhabit.

No way. Anita Brookner is just pulp fiction. Very lightweight, very dependent on limited sterotypes and frankly on a level with most magazine fiction of the 1960s.
