They’re so happy to leave their Muslim-majority countries. I wonder why.

Muslim migrants show gratitude to Allah for guiding them safely across the Channel to Britain with assistance from the RNLI.
Certain people don’t realise the risk they take.
I appreciate the daily work the RNLI does. They don’t deserve the abuse and threats from the usual suspects.

Also, we should be looking closer when talking about the future of conservatism, traditionalism and Roman Catholicism in Europe
Less than 5% of French people are practicing Catholics, and right wing movements are still quite fringe. Yet among military officers, about 80% are Catholic and half of all practice, a huge contrast to the secularism of Europe in large. The institutions have deep ties to the Church and to conservative factions, even if just as a legacy from past eras.
This leads me into the concept of institutional capture. Sure, the general population will always believe in this and that and whatever. But if, for example, a class as powerful and influential as the nations officer corps overwhelmingly supports an idea of, say, traditional Catholicism… it can be worth paying attention to.

The majority of French military officers are conservative and are practicing Catholics (sources say 77% are Catholic and 51% are practicing, compared to larger France which is abysmally low).
The enlisted is more representative of the general population, with a high Muslim and secular population in the enlisted rank and file. However, it doesn’t matter. Only the officer corps does. For all of history nations have recruited foreigners, minorities, draftees, etc to serve in militaries.
Franco is a good modern example of this, having served in the Moroccan protectorate most of his military career which called upon Moroccan population regularly to fight in the Spanish army.

Vladimir Putin is preparing to escalate his war against Ukraine, which includes attacks on Kyiv’s allies in Europe.
Western intelligence officials believe the Russian leader is laying the ground for a “stealth mobilisation” after elections this weekend, in which thousands of Russians could be drafted.
